Effect of Plant Density and Harvest Days on Yield and Its Attributes of White Jute Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at experimental field of Jute Agriculture Experimental Station, Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI), Jagir, Manikgong with a view to find out the effect of plant density and harvest days on fibre yield and its attributes of white jute during April to August 2007. The experiment consisted of three harvesting times viz. 90, 105 and 120 days after emergence and three population densities of 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 lac ha^-1 as treatments. Two white jute varieties BJC-83 and CVE-3 were the study materials. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The plant height, middle diameter, basal diameter and fibre yield were influenced by population density except top diameter and stick yield. The highest fibre yield was recorded in variety CVE-3 with 3.5 lac plants ha^-1 at 120 days harvest. The fibre yield increased successively with the increase of harvesting time. The variety BJC-83 gave highest harvest index and fibre:stick ratio than that of CVE-3. The interactions of population density x harvesting time; population density x varieties; harvesting time x varieties and population density x harvesting time x varieties influenced yield and yield attributes.

Objectives:

To find out the effect of population density and harvesting time on yield and yield attributes of white jute varieties namely BJC-83 and CVE-3.

Methodology:

The research work was conducted at the experimental field of Jute Agriculture Experimental Station (JAES), Manikgonj, Bangladesh Jute Research Institute during the period from April to August, 2007. The site was located at 23°53.95"N latitude and 90°04''E longitude with an elevation of 8.8 mm from the sea level. The experimental land was low to medium. The pH of the soil ranges from 6.5-7.0. The site was covered by active Brahmaputra, Jamuna floodplain agro-ecological zone of Bangladesh (AEZ No-7 and 8). The treatments of the experiment consisted of three population densities (3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 lac ha^-1), three harvesting dates (90, 105 and 120 days after emergence) and two varieties (BJC-83 and CVE-3) of Corchorus capsularis L. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. There were 54 unit plots in the experiment. The size of each unit plot was 4.0 m x 2.5 m. Each unit plot and block was separated from each other by 50 cm and 1m, respectively. All recorded data were analyzed with the analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique and the treatment mean differences in question of significant F-test were adjusted following the procedure of New Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

The yield and yield contributing characters were influenced by the density of plants except top diameter and stick yield. The interaction between harvesting time and population density influenced both fibre and stick yields. It also influenced the yield contributing characters, namely plant height, basal diameter, middle diameter and top diameter. The highest fibre and stick yields found in 4.0 lac ha^-1 population with 120 days of harvesting time. Due to the interaction of variety and population density the plant height, middle diameter, top diameter, basal diameter fibre yield and stick yield were affected significantly. The variety CVE-3 produced the highest fibre and stick yields at 120 DAE. The interaction effects among variety, population density and harvesting time were influenced the fibre and its all yield contributing attributes. Higher fibre yield was recorded in variety CVE-3 with 3.5 lac ha^-1 population density and at 120 days harvest. All the first and second degree interaction effects were not significant on all the agronomic characters, closer spacing and later stages of harvest in any combination showed the tendency of higher productivity.
