Comparative Study on the Spinnability of Bangladeshi and Pakistani Cotton in Rotor Spinning System

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This research effort was carried out at spinning department of Delta Spinning Mills Ltd. in 2007. The properties of Bangladeshi (BD) & Pakistani (PAK) cotton fibres and yams, spun from the respective fibers were studied and compared. Test results of yarns revealed that Bangladeshi cotton is superior to Pakistani cotton in respect of evenness/uniformity (Um%) which has been reflected by unevenness percent, co-efficient of variation (CV%), thick & thin places, extensibility and hairiness. Other physico-mechanical properties like breaking strength, CV% of count strength product (CSP) etc. are found comparable.

Objectives:

To study the comparative study on the spinnability of Bangladeshi and Pakistani cotton in rotor spinning system

Methodology:

The experiment on the spinability of Bangladeshi & Pakistani cotton was carried out in Rotor spinning system. Mixed Delta pine 50, Deltapine 61 and Acala 90 Bangladeshi cotton varieties were used for the study. The properties of both Bangladeshi and Pakistani cotton were assessed in the laboratory of College of Textile Technology. The fibre length was measured by the Shirley Comb sorter. Micronaire value was tested by WIRA cotton fineness meter. The fibre bundle strength was determined by using the Pressley instrument with clamps set at zero gauge. The tests were carried out in the standard testing atmosphere i.e. relative humidity (R.H 65±2%) and temperature (20±2°C) (5). The cotton slivers were produced by using Shirley Miniature card and subsequently processed by the Shirley Draw frame (4). Finally different count of yarns (18^s, 22^s& 28^s Ne yarns) were produced from both BD & PAK cotton slivers by the Rotor spinning frame (6). The properties of spun yarns were determined by the Uster Evenness Tester (UT3) (5) at standard relative humidity & temperature.

Achievement/Findings:

The study indicated that Bangladeshi cotton was more spinnable than Pakistani cotton and yarn quality of Bangladeshi cotton was better than Pakistani cotton except neps. Therefore, emphasis should be given to produce more Bangladeshi cotton and save huge amount of foreign currency in importing cotton fibres from abroad, which have a direct impact on the economy of Bangladesh.
