Zonal Yield Trial with a Promising Salt Tolerant Wheat Line

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Plant height and grain yield ha^-1 of both L-880-43 and the check variety reduced significantly in saline areas than non saline area. Additionally, effective tiller number of BARI Gom-25 and grain number of L-880-43 decreased significantly at all the locations in saline than non saline area. Effective tiller number and panicle length of L-880-43 reduced significantly at Khulna and Patuakhali locations while that of BARI Gom-25 reduced significantly only at Patuakhali. The mutant line L-880-43 produced significantly higher grain yield than the salt tolerant check variety, BARI Gom-25 at all locations in both saline and non saline areas except Khulna.

Objectives:

To assess genotype-environment interaction of a promising salt tolerant mutant line of wheat

Methodology:

With a view to assess the performance over different locations in the saline and non saline areas, this experiment was carried out with L-880-43 along with the only released salt tolerant wheat variety in Bangladesh, BARI Gom-25. The experiment was set at four locations, three were in saline area at Satkhira, Khulna and Patuakhali and the other in the non saline area at Ishurdi following RCB design with 3 replications and. The recorded salinities in all locations in the saline ares were too low to affect growth and yield of wheat as because from a previous experiment we observed wheat is sensitive to soil salinity ≥6 dSm^-1 when exposed before sowing. A unit plot size was 5.0 m × 4.0 m. Seeds were sown at 5-7 cm distances within rows of 20 cm apart on 06, 10 and 14 December at Satkhira, Khulna and Patuakhali, respectively, and on 22 November 2013 at Ishurdi. Recommended doses of fertilizers, cultural and intercultural operations were followed where necessary. Soil salinity records were gathered during sowing, vegetative and flowering stages from top soil and 15 cm depth. Data on plant height, effective tiller number, panicle length, and grains panicle^-1 and grain yield plot^-1 were recorded at harvest. Grain yield plot^-1 was converted to t ha^-1 later.
