The study was conducted to generate information of cultural management practices at farmers level on turmeric production as well as input-out put relationship of it. The study revealed that most farmers in Nilphamari and Panchagarh planted turmeric in 56x21 cm spacing while 46x22cm was maintained in Khagrachari. The planting period was started from April and extended to May in all study areas. The average yield of turmeric was about 15247 kg/ha. The total cost or production was Tk. 41725/ha in which 87 and 13 percent and land use cost. respectively. The turmeric farmer received on an average Tk. 52299/ha as net return. The benefit-cost ratio (2.25) indicated that turmeric cultivation was profitable. The functional analysis of production shows that human labour, oil cake, and MP influenced the yield or turmeric significantly and the farmers inefficiently used some production inputs in study areas. Lack of labour in peak period, low price in harvest period and disease and pest infestation were main problems laced by the farmer.

To identify the technology packages employed by the farmers to estimate economic profitability and to find out the constraints to its higher production at farm level.

A three-stage sampling technique was followed to select sample farmers for the study. In the first stage of sampling, four important turmeric growing upazilas, namely Dimla of Nilpharnari, Debigonj of Panchagarh and Dighinala and Panchari of Khagrachari districts were selected on the basis of higher acreage and production. In the second stage, one union from each upazila, where the crop is cultivated extensively was purposively selected, Before selecting the sample farmers, a complete list of all turmeric growers in each union was prepared by the help of Block Supervisors (BS) of DAE, Finally, a total of 60 farmers were selected randomly taking 20 farmers from each district The necessary information was collected with the help of pre-tested interview schedule using direct interview in 1998-1999 production period, The cost of land use was calculated on the basis of per year rental value of land, The collected data was summarized and analyzed to achieve the objectives of the study. Graphical, tabular and multiple linear regression model were used in analyzing the collected data of the study. The production of turmeric is likely to be influenced by different factors, such as seed, manure, fertilizer, proper management, etc. In order to estimate the parameters, multiple linear regression model was fitted in the study areas. To examine empirically the differences of yields of turmeric among the study areas may be expressed as

Y=a+ b1X1+ b2X2+b3X3+b4X4+b5X5+b6X6+ b7X7+b8X8+Ui

Where, Y = Yield of turmeric (Kg/ha), a = lntercept, b1 ... b8 = Co-efficient of variables, XI = Human labour
(Man-days/ha), X2 = Seed (Kg/ha), X3 = Manure (Kg/ha), X4 = Oil cake (Kg/ha), X5 =Urea (Kg/ha), X6 = TSP
(Kg/ha), X7 = MP (Kg/ha), X8=-Gypsum (Kg/ha), U1 = Error term.

Turmeric cultivation is profitable enterprise to the farmers of Bangladesh. BCR indicates that farmer could earn Tk.2.25 by the investment of Tk. 1.00. On the other hand, the yield of turmeric in Spices Research Center, Bogra was 25000 to 30000 kg per hectare according to released new variety BARI Holud 3 which was about 1.6 to 1.97 times higher than the yield of study areas. It might be due to using traditional variety and technology and some different socio-economic and marketing constraints regarding turmeric cultivation adopted by the farmers. So, there is a scope to increase yield of turmeric by practicing HYV with improve production technologies.
