Optimizing Fertilizer Rate for Brinjal in Grey Terrace Soil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiments were conducted on Grey Terrace Soil (Series:Chhiata) of Joydebpur, Gazipur to evaluate the response of brinjal c.v. Islampuri to different levels of N, P, K and S along with a blanket dose of Zn and cowdung during rabi seasons of 1993-94 and 1994-95. Effects of N, P, K and S were significant on fruit size and fruit yield in both years. The fertilizer rate of 150 kg N, 100 kg P₂O₅, 120 kg K₂O and 15 kg S ha^-1 with blanket dose of 5 kg Zn ha^-1 and 10 t ha^-1 of cowdung was most suitable to optimize the fruit yield of brinjal.

Objectives:

To find out the yield potential of brinjal as affected by different fertilizer elements.

Methodology:

Experiments were conducted at the central farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi seasons of 1993-94 and 1994-95. The soil was silty clay loam having 5.9 pH and 0.8% organic matter content. The amount of total N available P, K and S in the soil were 0.08%, 12 ppm, 0.2 me% and 13 ppm respectively. Particle size distribution was determine by hydrometer method and textural class was ascertained using Marshalls's triangular co-ordinates. Soil pH was determined in 1:2.5. Soil water suspension using a glass electrode pH meter. Total nitrogen was determined by micro kjeldahl method. Organic matter and other soil nutrients were determinded by ASI method. The trials were laid out in a randomized complete block design with 14 treatments replicated thrice. The unit plot size was 3m x 2.5m. There were five levels of N (0, 50, 100,150, 200 kg ha^-1), four levels of P₂O₅ (0, 50, 100, 150 kg ha^-1), four levels of K₂O (0, 60, 120, 180 kg ha^-1) and three levels of S (0, 15, 30 kg ha^-1). Well decomposed cowdung @ 10 t ha^-1 and zinc as zinc oxide 5 kg ha^-1, respectively, were applied in all plots as blanket dose during final land preparation. The full amount of P, K, S and the half of nitrogen were applied during final land preparation. The remaining half of nitrogen was top dressed at 30 days after transplanting. The test variety was Islampuri. Healthy, uniform and disease free 30 day old seedlings were transplanted on 1st December of 1993 and 1994 maintaining row to row and plant to plant spacing of 75 cm and 50 cm, respectively. Light irrigation with watering cane was given up to 3 days for plant establishment. The first flood irrigation was given at ten days of transplanting. The second irrigation was applied after top dressing and then at twenty days^' intervals. The first harvesting of the fruit was done on 1st week of February in both years and thereafter at an intervals of one week. The yield and yield attributes data were analyzed statistically and the mean differences were evaluated by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Thus it may be concluded from the present study that the application 150 kg N, 100 kg P₂O₅, 120 kg K₂O, and 15 kg S ha^-1 with the blanket dose of 5 kg Zn ha^-1 and 10 t ha^-1 of cowdung might be sufficient to optimize the fruit yield of brinjal in the Grey Terrace Soil of Joydebpur.
