Field experiments were conducted in Calcareous Brown Floodplain Soils (Series: Darsana) of Jessore to evaluate the effects of different levels of S (0, 15, 30 and 45 kg ha-1 from gypsum) and Zn (0, 3 and 6 kg ha-1 from Zinc oxide) with a blanket dose of 120: 80: 40: kg ha-1 of N: P2O5: K2O, respectively on mustard cv. SS-75 during the rabi season in three consecutive years. Zinc did not influence any of yield attributes, yield of grain and straw and oil content. The combined effect of S and Zn was not significant. Sulphur significantly increased siliqua plant-1, seed siliqua-1, 1000- seed weight, yield of grain and straw and oil content. The grain yield significantly higher than all other rates was produced by 30 kg S ha-1 after which there was a decline. Response function of seed yield (pooled) to S was quadratic and regression equation was Y= 0.36 + 0.06509S -.00095S2 and R2= 0.99. The equation indicated that the maximum grain yield of 1.50 t ha-1 could be obtained by applying 35.20 kg S ha-1 and each kg of S could produce 32.40 kg of mustard grain up to 35.20 kg S ha-1, beyond this rate, the grain yield would be reduced by 0.92 kg for each 1 kg of S. The oil content was also significantly increased to 43.27% by the application of S up to 30 kg ha-1 and the increase was 10.35% (Pooled) higher than zero S-level.

To find out the optimum dose of S and Zn with a blanket dose of N P K for maximizing seed yield and oil production under irrigated condition in Calcareous Brown Floodplain Solis of Jessore.

Field experiments were conducted in Calcareous Brown Floodplain Soils (Series: Darsana) of Jessore in the rabi season of 1989-90, 1990-91 and 1991-92. A description of some physical and chemical properties of soil of the experimental plots collected from a depth of 0-15 cm prior to application of fertilizer are analyzed. SoiI analysis was done for particle size distribution by hydrometer method and other characters were determined. The experiments were laid out in randomized complete block design with 12 treatments replicated four times. There were four levels of S (0, 15, 30 and 45 kg ha-1 from gypsum) and three levels of Zn (0, 3 and 7 kg ha-1 form Zinc oxide). A blanket dose of 120: 80: 100 kg ha-1 of N: P2O5: K2O from urea, triple superphosphate and muriate of potash, respectively was applied. The treatment combinations are shown in this experiments. All fertilizers except nitrogen were applied at the time of final land preparation. NItrogen was applied in two equal splits (a) at time of final land preparation and (b) Just before flowering. The test variety SS-75 was used. The seeds at 10 kg ha-1 were sown m rows 30 cm apart in solid line on 2nd, 4th and 7th November 1989, 1990 and 1991. respectively. The plants were irrigated twice (a) at vegetative stage and (b) at pod filling stage. The crops were harvested on 13th, 16th and 20th February 1990, 1991 and 1992, respectively. Six measures were taken of mustard: number of siliqua plant-1, seed siliqua-1, 1000-seed weight, yield of seed and straw and oil content of seed. The oil content was determined by soxhlet apparatus. Data were statistically analyzed and Ducan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) was used to determine significant difference at 0.05% in response of S and Zn within each factor measured. The regression analysis of seed yield was done to fit in quadrant function.
