Genetic Variability and Path Analysis in Tomato (lycopersicon Esculentum Mill.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Variability, character association and path coefficient analysis were studied for ten yield and yield components in 26 diverse genotypes of tomato. The highest genetic variability was found in number of clusters plant^-1 and number of fruits plant^-1. High heritability associated with high genetic advance were observed in number of clusters plant^-1, number of fruits plant^-1, plant height, fruit yield and fruit weight. Correlation studies showed that fruit yield had significant positive genotypic and phenotypic associations with number of fruits plant^-1, number of clusters plant^-1 and plant height. Path analysis revealed that number of fruits plant^-1, fruit weight, plant height and fruit length had positive direct effect on fruit yield. For selecting higher yielding genotypes, emphasis should therefore, be given on number of fruits plant^-1, plant height and fruit weight.

Objectives:

To find out the genetic variability, interrelationships among different characters and the direct and indirect contributions of these characters towards yield.

Methodology:

Twenty exotic genotypes or hybrids, collected from eight different seed companies, one from Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) and five released varieties of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARl) were used m the study. The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Rahmatpur, Barisal, during October 1997 to April 1998. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The unit plot size was 4.8 x 1.2 m with a spacing of 60 and 40 cm between rows and plants respectively. Seeds were sown in the seed bed on October 14, 1997 and 30 days old seedlings were transplanted in the main field Manures and chemical fertilizers were applied as per recommendation. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data on different characters viz. days to 50% flowering days to 1st harvest, plant height, number of clusters plant^-1, number of fruits cluster^-1, number of fruits plant^-1, fruit length/cm), fruit breadth (cm), average fruit weight (g) and yield (t/ha) were recorded. Genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation and heritability in broad sense of these were estimated while genetic advance was calculated. Genotypic and phenotypic correlation were obtained using the formulae. Path coefficient analysis was done following the method.

Achievement/Findings:

Results from the present findings indicated that number of fruits plant^-1, plant height and fruit weight had high heritability associated with high genetic advance. These characters also had high positive direct effect on fruit yield. Therefore, emphasis should be given on these traits when improvement of fruit yield of tomato is aimed at in a breeding programme.
