Yield Loss in Mungbean Due to Yellow Mosaic Virus Disease

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Losses in grain yield due to yellow mosaic virus (YMV) on mungbean were assessed during 1995-96 and 1996-97 in the southern parts of Bangladesh, using two var./line of mungbean viz, Kanti and BMX. The reduction in grain yield ranged from 20.25 to 68.58 and 35.88 to 75.50 percent in BMX and kanti respectively in 1995-95 and 22.75 to 60.62 and 25.03 to 70.63 percent during 1996-97 in per plant yield. Similar trends were also found in 1000 grain weight. Yield reduction was found to be related with yield and the pre-bloom infection by the disease. Reduction in yield was also found to be related with the reduction in pod number and seeds/pod. Earlier infection induced greater yield loss.

Objectives:

To estimating yield reduction by YMV.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during post-rabi of two consecutive years viz., 1995-96 and 1996-97 in the field of Regional Agricultural Research Station, Rahmatpur, Barisal. The mungbean var./line namely, Kanti and BMX-880045-10 were sown in a replicated field using Randomized Complete Block Design. The unit plot size was 4m x 3m with 30 cm row to row distance. The experiment was kept under keen observation. Plants showing mosaic symptom were first tagged within 24 days after sowing (DAS) and subsequently at 10 day interval till the crop reached harvesting stage. In order to distinguish plant with disease symptoms at different growth stages, six categories of plant age as described below were examined and tagged. Category A: Plant with no disease symptom till harvest. Category B: Plant in which disease symptom appeared within 24 days after sowing. Category C: In which disease symptom appeared between 25 and 34 days after sowing. Category D: In which disease symptoms appeared between 35 and 44 days after sowing. Category E: In which disease symptoms appeared between 45 and 54 days after sowing. Category F: In which disease symptom appeared between 55 and 64 days after sowing. At the time of harvest 30 tagged plants were randomly selected categorywise and were observed for pods/plant, seeds/pod, 1000 grain weight and yield/plant. The data obtained were analyzed statistically and means were separated by DMRT. Percentage of yield reduction was calculated by the formula.

The findings of the study indicated that the disease is highly destructive when crop is infected at an early stage.
