Genetic Divergence Analysis in Mungbean (vigna Radiata)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetic divergence of 82 mungbcan genotypes was estimated using D² and principal component analysis. The genotypes under study fell into 7 clusters. The cluster VII contained the maximum number of genotype and the cluster IV contained the minimum. The inter cluster distance ill most of the cases were higher than the intra cluster distance indicating wider genetic diversity among the genotypes of different groups. The highest inter duster distance between duster I and IV followed by between II and IV showing wide diversity among the groups. The highest intra-duster distance was observed in cluster IV and lowest in duster VI. Pod/plant, seed/pod and 100 grain weight showed maximum contribution towards total divergence among the genotypes.

Objectives:

To understand the nature and magnitude of genetic divergence and the characters contributing genetic diversity by D² statistics.

Methodology:

Eighty two local and exotic genotypes/varieties of mungbean were grown in Bangabhandu Sheik Mujibur Rahman Agricultural Univerisity, Salna, Gazipur during the period April to June, 2001. The seeds were sown in a randomized complete block (RCB) design with three replications and a spacing of 30 cm row to row and 5 cm plant to plant. There were 2 rows, each 5m long, within each plot. N, P and K were applied as basal at the rate of 40-60-20 kg/ha. Two irrigations, one at seedling and another at vegetative stage were applied. Normal intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data were recorded from 10 plants randomly selected from the plot of each replication on days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height, number of pod/plant, number or seed/pod, 100 seed weight and seed Yield/plant. All the statistical analysis was carried out using GENSTAT-5 computer software.

Achievement/Findings:

Early maturing, medium height, highest pod/plant and high yielding cultivars from cluster V, genotype for highest seed/ pod from cluster IV and bold seeded from cluster I could be selected as parents for hybridization program.
