A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of five levels of N (viz. 60, 80, 100, 120, and 140 kg N/ha) and two combined levels of PK (viz. 46 kg P2O5+30 kg K2O/ha and 57 kg P2O5,+45 kg K2O/ha) on two hybrid and inbred rice varieties. BRRldhan 32 showed better performance than Alok 6201. The latter failed to attain its potential yield, which might be due to high spikelet sterility and less number of tillers/plant. Increasing levels of nitrogen significantly favoured all crop parameters except HI. BRRldhan 32 with the highest level of nitrogen, produced the highest number of bearing tillers/plant, number of grains/plant and grain yield. Both varieties showed an increasing trend in grain yield due to interaction of variety and nitrogen levels. Higher levels of phosphorus and potassium significantly increased the values of all the crop parameters except plant height, number of non-bearing tillers/hill/plant and harvest index. The interaction effects of variety and phosphorus and potassium showed a regular trend of increase in number of total spikclets/plant and grains/plant. The interaction effect of variety, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium was significant only on the number of bearing tillers/plant. Both the varieties showed positive response to higher levels of NPK.

To observe the response of two hybrid and inbred rice varieties to different levels of NPK fertilizers.

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh with loamy soil during June to November 1998. The two rice varieties used were Alok 6201 (hybrid) and BRRI dhan 32 (inbred). There were three factors: variety, N-fertilizer and PK- fertilizer; combining all these factors, there were 20 treatments. A split-split plot design was used for the experiment with 4 replications. There were 2 varieties viz. Alok 6201 and BRRldhan 32; 5 nitrogen levels i.e. 60, 80, 100, 120 and 140 kg N/ha and 2 combined levels of phosphorus and potassium viz. 46 kg P2O5+30 kg K2O/ha and 57 kg P2O5+45 kg K2O/ha. One third of N, total PKS and Zn fertilizers were applied as a basal dose at the final land preparation. Sulphur and zinc fertilizers were applied as per BRRI recommended dose @ 11.11 and 3.593 kg/ha respectively. Seedlings were raised in wet seedbeds and only one seedling/hill was transplanted at the age of 33 days. One third of N fertilizer was applied as split at 21 days after transplant (DAT) and the rest was applied as split at 42 DAT. The fertilizers used were: urea for N, triple super phosphate for P, muriate of potash for K, gypsum for S and zinc sulphate for Zn. The unit plot size was 2.5m x 4.0m. The spacing between rows was 20 cm and between plants was 15 cm for both varieties. The crops were sprayed against stem borers with Sumithion 50 EC. Tilt was sprayed twice as preventive measure against false smut. They were used with usual cultural practices. Alok 6201 crop was harvested at 120 DAT and BRRldhan 32 crop was harvested at 142 DAT. Data on growth characters, yield attributes and grain yield were collected and analyzed statistically following the ANOVA technique.

From the above finding it is clear that BRRIdhan 32 showed its superiority to Alok 6201 and ultimately produced significantly higher grain yield, straw yield, biological yield and HI. Alok 6201 failed to give higher grain yield probably due to high spikelet sterility. Significantly higher grain yield were produced by BRRldhan 32 than Alok 6201 at higher level of nitrogen with a regular trend of increase. The higher level of phosphorus and potassium was found to favour all the studied crop characters. The highest level of NPK produced grain yield with significant difference from those of other interactions. So, these varieties may response to higher levels of NPK beyond the highest levels in further investigations. In general, within the scope of the study, BRRldhan 32 was found to be better than Alok 6201 in respect of grain yield.
