Anatomical Study of Rudimentary Ovary of Indigenous Cow in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Gross and microscopic study was carried out on 22 rudimentary ovaries of indigenous cow. It was found that the ovaries were small, their surfaces and outline were rough and irregular. The average length, thickness and weight were 1.00 cm: 1.30 cm, and 1.50 g. respectively. The germinal epithelium was mainly flattened to cuboidal types and was loosely attached to the underlying tissues. The tunica albuginea was composed of connective tissue fibres and cells. Various types and stages of follicles and connective tissue fibres were observed in the cortex, while in the medulla, few degenerative and atretic to follicles, blood vessels and connective tissue were observed. The anovular cords were present both in cortex and medulla.

Objectives:

To carried out gross and histological studies on ovaries of anestrus cows in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

A total of 77 reproductive tract of cows of different ages having 154 ovaries were collected at random from different slaughter houses of Bangladesh. The age of animals were determined by dentition at the time of collecting the samples. The ovaries were cleaned and twenty two rudimentary ovaries were selected for the present study. The length, thickness and weight were measured using divider and scale and balance box respectively. The ovaries were fixed in AFA solution processed by following standard histological procedures. Sections of 7 micron thickness of ovary were cut and stained with Haematoxylin and Eosin stain, Verhoeff's elastic stain and Vengieson's stain for histological study. Suitable microphotographs were made for better illustration of the findIings.
