Studies on the Chemical Composition of Three Types of Water-hyacinth

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This investigatlon was taken up with special reference to chemical composition of 5 different parts of 3 types of water-hyacinth. Results showed that the nutrient contents of all the plants varied from type to type and also from parts to parts within the same type which were significant at 1% level of probability. From all these observations, type-l was found to be the best for nutrient components among the types analysed, and among parts of a whole plant, the leaves were the best in each type. On dry matter basis, all the types contained as much or more crude protein, fat and mineral matter as conventional forages except crude fibre content which was low in water hyacinth.

Objectives:

To know the chemical composition of the plants that grow under Bangladesh condition.

Methodology:

Representative samples of water-hyacinth of different types from different areas in and around Bangladesh Agricultural University Campus, Mymensingh were collected. Height of the plant, shape of stems, length of roots and rhizomes, colour and size of leaves were measured. Depending on the differences of above observed parameters, they were divided into three different types such as type I, II and III. To determine the nutrient content of different parts of the plant and plant as a whole, each type of plant was divided into five sub samples such as whole water-hyacinth, water-hyacinth without roots, water-hyacinth without roots and rhizomes, only stems and only leaves.

Each of these composite samples were chopped finely and kept on an aluminium dish and dried in the sun for two days, than the samples were placed in an oven at a temperature of 100-1 05⁰C for 24-48 hours until constant weight was found. The sun dried samples were ground by an automatic grinder and the grounded samples were passed through a seive of 40 mesh. Dry matter, crude protein, crude fibre ether-extract and total ash for each sample were determined according to the standard of A. O. A. C. (1960). Calcium and phosphorus contents of the samples were determined by the Colorimetric method (Hall ahd Hacskayto, 1963) and sodium and potassium were derermined by Flame emission method (Black, C.A. 1965), The chemicals used for the determination of above mentioned nutrients, were made by Merk and BDH company.
