Clinical and Haemotological Studies on Experimentally Induced Wound in the Goat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effect of different management practices of experimentally induced open wound on clinical and haematological parameters in Black Bengal goat was investigated. Vertical skin wounds of 2.5 cm length and 5 cm dept, were produced in the lumber region in nine Black Bengal goats. The experimental animals were randomIy divided into three equal groups: group I consisted of untreated control animals, group II were treated with adminstration of TerramycinR and local application of during powder and group III were terated with local application of dusting powder only. There was no significant effect of experimentally induced external wound on rectal temperature, pulse and respiration rates. Changes in TEC counts and Hb concentration were not statistically significant. There were statistically significant leukocytosis on 3rd days in gro up I and group III respectively.

Objectives:

To study the effect of skin wounds on rectal temperature, pulse, respiration rates and Haematological values.

Methodology:

Nine healthy female goats of three to four months of age were used in the present investigation. The body weights of these animals ranged frem 10-12 kg. They were kept in loose box and were acclimatized for two weeks. The animals were apparently healthy and were maintained on uniform diet and management throughout the experimental period and were subjected to inflection of cutaneous wound. The skin wound was inflected over the third lumber transverse process, about an inch vertical to the vertibraI column using aseptic surgical procedures. Prior to incision the skin was desensitized by local application of 2% XylocainR adrenaline (Lidocaine hydro- chloride, Astra). The wounds thus produced were left unsutured. After making wound, the goats were randomly divided into three groups with three animals in each group, and subjected to three different levels of wound management. The wounds in these group were cleansed daily with normal saline and these animals were maintained carefully without interfering granulation tissue formation. The wounds were routinely washed with 0.1% dettol (Cloroxylenol BPC 4.8%, lso- Alcho le BP 12% ) were treated with the administration of TerramycinR (Oxytetracyclino hydrochloride) at the dose rate of 11 mg/kg body weight daily for 3 days. In addition to antibiotic therapy dusting powder was applied locally for 12 days. The wounds in this group were routinely washed with 0.1% dettol and was applied locally dusting powder for 12 days. No antibiotic was administered. Rectal temperature, pulse and respiration rates were monitored before and on 3rd, 10th and 30th days after wounding. In addition two ml blood was collected from jugular vein of each experirnent al animal. The blood was analysed for total eryterocyte and leukocyte counts (TEC & TLC). Statistical analysis were done by paired student 't' test using a programme "AMSTAT" a computer software of Amstrad pic, UK. for comparing variations among the groups in different days after wounding and before wounding.

Achievement/Findings:

From the present experiment it may be concluded that external wound surgically produced in goat treated with different antimicrobial agents may not affect rectal temperature, pulse and respiration rates and apparently have no effects on TEC. The wounds may cause leukocytosis in absence of antibiotic therapy.
