Relationship Between Bacteriological Quality and Physico Chemical Factors of Water Obtained from Various Sources in Different Seasons.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A total of 690 water samples collected from five different sources in three seasons were examined for their water quality based on total bacterial count and nine physico-chemical properties. In a few samples of tubewell and all the samples of tap supply, pond, river and sea water, total bacterial count was found quite high as per the internationaI standards. The combined effect of physico-chemical properties of water on the growth and propagation of bacteria in summer, rainy and winter seasons was highly significant (P average 0.01) in pnd, river and sea water, except in sea water in winter season. The impact of physico-chemical factors on the growth of bacteiria in the tap and tubewell water was very poor and insignificant (P average 0.05).

Objectives:

To determine suitable physico-chemical parameters of water that may relate with the evidence of bacterial pollution or quality determination.

Methodology:

A. To perform bacteriological analysis a total of 690 water samples from tap, tubewell, river, pond and sea in three seasons were examined for total bacterial count as per standard methods (APHA, 1982) and Danish Standard Method 265 (WHO,1977). B. Analysis of ni na different physico-chemical properties of water was carried out according to the recommen dation of the standard methods (APHA, 1982 ). i) pH was measured with Beckman laboratory pH meter. ii) Dissolved O₂ was determined by Azid modification of iodornetric method. iii) Free C0₂ was estimated by Titrimetric method using phenolphthelin indicator and N/44 NaoH solution. iv) Available nitrogen was analysed by phenoldishlphonic acid method through colorimeter. v) Available phosphorus was quantitated by Stannous chloride method using ascorbic acid in a Spectrophotometer-20. vi) Bioloqlcal oxygen demand (BOD) and total dissolved solute (TDS) were determined. vii) Salinity of water measured by salinity meter (WHO, 1977). viii) Colour and taste of water samples were recorded as per sensory panels.

Achievement/Findings:

It has been revealed that the nine physico-chemicaI properties of water had combind effect in the growth of bacteria in water obtained from five different sources in all of the three seasons. The combind effect of tap and tubewell water was however observed insignificant (P average 0.05) and negligible. On the other hand, the effect was highly significant (P average 0.01) in case of both pond and river water in all three seasons. In sea water, the effect of these properties was significant (P average 0.05) during summer and rainy season but not in winter. From the result of this study it is assummed that the effect of physico-chemical properties of water on the bacterial grouth may perhaps depend upon the concentration of inorganic nutrients. The appearance of high inorganic nutrients generally reffact the indication of water pollution which can be thought to create favourable conditions and alter the required environment for the growth of bacteria. Since these microorganisms of water obtain energy from the environmental sources, as organic and inorganic compounds, the water pollution caused by them is determined primarily by the chemical nature of the pollutants.
