A Study of Productivity of Modified Hessian Spinning Frame.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A slip draft Hessian spinning frame was modified into ring system. In this modification, all fibres were removed and ring and travellers were introduced. Two rails were incorporated instead of one original rail. The upper rail contains rings and lower rail contains spindles with bobbins. A back roller was installed at the back of the machine for shifting power from the main roller to spindles. 5 lb/spy yarns were produced through the modified system. Productivity of this machine was increased by 22% and qualities of the yarns were improved.

Objectives:

Jute fibre has been facing a tough competition with man made fibre since its emergence in the world textile market. To overcome this competition, it is necessary to lower the production cost of jute yarn by improving the productivity through developing/modifying the existing jute machinery. With this modified spinning frame comparatively finer count yarn can be produced. Slip draft Hessian spinning is a available in all jute mills so developed technology will be helpful to the industries of jute sector.

Methodology:

Jute is a natural cellulosic bast fibre. It is a textile fibre of good spinnable character. At present there are large number of man-made fibre in the world textile market. Jute fibre has been facing a tough competition with man made fibre since its emergence in the world textile market. To overcome this competition, it is necessary to lower the production cost of jute yarn by improving the productivity through developing/modifying the existing jute machinery. With this modified spinning frame comparatively finer count yarn can be produced. Slip draft Hessian spinning is a available in all jute mills so developed technology will be helpful to the industries of jute sector.

There are various methods of jute spinning, both in the conventional area and in the non-conventional area. Under the conventional area the following methods namely, Cap spinning, mule spinning, flyer spinning, ring spinning, centrifugal spinning etc, are in use. Among these flyer and ring spinning method are widely used industry for commercial production of jute yarns. In this experiment flyer system of Hessian spinning frame was modified into ring system.

In this experiment a Slip draft spinning frame was used. Bangla White B (BWB) jute fibre was used for conducting the experiments. The finisher drawing slivers were taken from the experimental spinning mill of Bangladesh jute research institute (BJRI). The modified machine was operated at 6000 rpm spindle speed instead of its original flyer speed of 3750 rpm. The spinning quality of yarns was tested by a computerized Instron machine of Testing and Standardization Department of BJRI under standard atmospheric condition, 65+2% R.H. and 20 ⁰C.

Achievement/Findings:

This investigation that existing Hessian spinning frame can be modified into ring system. The jute yarn can be produced through the system. Productivity of modified system is 22.03% higher than that of the existing Flyer system. Quality ratio of yarns produced by existing system is 98.98%. On the other hand quality ratio of yarn produced by modified system is 93.60%. Other textile properties of yarn produced by both systems are very similar. Yarn produced by modified system can be used for the production of textile fabrics.

There is an on-winding tension between bobbin and flyer in flyer type spinning frame. The amount of tension is normally 0.8 kg although wide variations in these values are found. 5 lb/spy jute yarn cannot with stand the force. So a large number of yarn breaks occurs in this system. Consequently productivity of the machine goes down. On the other hand, this tension is very low in ring system. Due to the absence of on-winding tension is very low in ring system. In this experiment number of yarn breaks/hour-spindle is 2.43 for flyer type and 1.3 for ring type Hessian spinning frame.
