Farm Level Yield Analysis of Tomato Cultivation in Selected Area of Bangladesh: an Economic Profile

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to provide analytical information on agro-economic factors in relation to yield gap and return under different situations of tomato cultivation. The yield of tomato was highest for modern variety in demonstration plot (51488 kg/ha) and lowest for local variety (19558 kg/ha), Yield gap in one hectare of land was found 18877 kg (58%) between DP (MV) and NDP (MV). It was 31930 kg (163 %) between DP (MV) and LV, and 13053 kg (67%) between NDP (MV) and LV. Gross margin gap was found 68% between DP (MV) and NDP (MV), and it was 581% between DP (MV) and LV, and 305% between NDP (MV) and LV on TVC basis. Marginal analysis also indicated superiority of modem variety under improved method of cultivation at the farmers' level. The result of the study demonstrated that adoption of package technology can minimize the identified yield gap in tomato cultivation.

Objectives:

To provide analytical information on agro-economic factors in relation to yield and return under different situations of tomato cultivation at farm level.

Methodology:

Two districts, namely Rangpur and Jessore were selected purposively for the study. Sadar and Chugacha thana of Jessore district, and Mithapukur and Badorgonj thana of Rangpur district were selected where tomato was extensively cultivated and both Ratan and local variety were present. A complete list of tomato growers under DP, NDP and LV were prepared. In NDP, farmers are using modem variety of Ratan and adopted their own management practices for tomato cultivation. Improved management practices were done by the farmers on DP under the supervision of extension personnel. All inputs including seed (Ratan variety) were also supplied by the extension people for DP. Farmers were selected randomly from the list. For local variety, 60 farmers were selected taking 15 from each thana and 40 farmers, 10 from each thana were selected for NDP. Out of 32 DP of Ratan variety, 16 plots were selected taking 4 from each union. The farmers plot with local variety and NDP were taken from nearby DPs in the same union. Thus a total of 116 farmers were chosen for this study and all these farmers were taken from the same location. The data were collected during (1993-94) the rabi season, using structured interview schedule The informations were summarized, averaged and interpreted as per objective of the study.

Achievement/Findings:

It is apparent from the preceding discussion that tomato is a lucrative crop for cultivation. Ratan variety of tomato under demonstration plot generate higher yield and profit as compared to non-demonstration plot of both Ratan variety and local variety. It may be for better improved technology employed in the DP by the farmers and the extension personnel. Between modern variety and local variety, modern variety yielded higher return and gross margin mainly due to varietal difference. To reduce the gap in respect of yield, return, and gross margin, it is therefore, necessary to have strong extension service and short-term training programme regarding the technology of tomato cultivation for the farmers. As farmers are not very much aware of the improved technological package of tomato cultivation, it is also necessary to disseminate the latest information on improved technology and encourage the tomato growers to increase production. However, extension service also needs to be strengthened to motivate the farmers to replace local variety by modern variety with recommended management practices.
