Evaluation of Five Aman Rice Varieties Based on Morpho-physiological Characters

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot and two field experiments were conducted with five Aman rice varieties viz., Binasail, Binadhan-4, Binadhan-7, Binadhan-11 and Binadhan-12 at three locations, BINA pot yard, Mymensingh and sub-stations, Magura and Ishurdi. The pot experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design and the field experiments were laid out in Randomly Completely Block Design with three replications. The collected data were analyzed statistically and Duncan’s Multiple Range Test was done to compare the means. Chlorophyll content, photosynthesis and Nitrate reductase (NR) activity were high at initial stage and gradually decreased with age. Chlorophyll content and photosynthesis rate did not vary significantly in all the varieties. But higher NR activity was in Binadhan-11 compared to other varieties. Binadhan-7 produced highest yield followed by Binadhan-11 and Binadhan-12 due to higher number of effective tiller and lower number of unfilled grains plant^-1.

Objectives:

To find out better morph o-physiological character for higher yield

Methodology:

Five aman varieties viz., Binasail, Binadhan-4, Binadhan-7, Binadhan-11 and Binadhan-12 were evaluated at three locations, e.g. BINA pot yard, Mymensingh and sub-stations, Magura and Ishurdi. The pot experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design and the field experiments were laid out in Randomly Completely Block Design with three replications. Unit plot size was 4m x 3m. Distance between line to line and plant to plant was 20 cm and 15 cm. Recommended doses of fertilizer were applied. Transplanting was done with 30-days-old seedling. Normal weeding and other cultural practices were done as and when necessary. To study ontogenetic growth characteristics, a total of four harvests were made starting from 35 DAT at 15 days interval. Data were collected from randomly selected 5 plants from each plot. The plants were separated into leaf, stem and root and the corresponding dry weights were recorded after oven drying at 80 ± 2⁰C for 72 hours. Chlorophyll content, photosynthesis and Nitrate reductase (NR) activity were measured at tillering, panicle initiation, flowering and grain filling stage. At maturity, 10 hills plot^-1 were randomly selected from each pot for yield and yield contributing characters. Grain yield was finally converted into th^-1. The collected data were analyzed statistically and Duncan’s Multiple Range Test was done to compare the means.
