Impact of Rural Urban Linkage on Agriculture System: a Case Study

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Rural urban linkage symbolizes the interdependence between rural and urban area. This linkage is established by commodity and monetary flow. One of the supporting processes involved in commodity flow and monetary flow is information flow. For agro-based commodity flow, growth center plays a vital role where interchange between agricultural crops and revenue occurs. Like an agro-based economy like Bangladesh, rural-urban linkage is very important as money flow from agricultural commodity keeps rural economy sustaining. The purpose of this article is to identify the impending impact of a growth center on generating the rural urban linkage which is established by grower seller and wholesalers participation. The article principally covenants with agricultural crops as component of commodity chain flow, monetary flow and information flow. It has been written generally on the basis of relevant information that collected by field survey from local Amin Bazar grow center. The study identifies relationship between cultivated land area, tenure and ownership pattern of land, distance etc with different types of flow of rural urban linkage. On the basis of this relationship, probable impact of rural urban linkage on rural agriculture of the surrounding areas has been identified. The study reveals a framework developed showing the interaction between commodity, monetary and information flow. Identification of contribution of different factors will be helpful to take required measure for improving rural agriculture at policy level. Some recommendation has also been made for development of rural agriculture to strengthen rural urban linkage on the basis of this study.

Objectives:

To analyze the characteristics and catalyst of the various aspects of rural urban linkage

Methodology:

The study was conducted on the basis of the data collected from the primary survey. Questionnaire survey was conducted in a growth center to collect the required information regarding commodity and monetary information. Total number of sample surveyed was four; stratified into two categories: Grower sellers and Wholesalers. Number of sample from each stratum was twenty. Grower sellers and wholesalers were selected as sample as they are the major traders of agricultural product in growth centers. Grower sellers were farmers or any person selling agricultural products brought from them and sell products to the urban dealers. Wholesalers might work as intermediary who purchased agricultural product from local grower sellers and sells them to the buyers from urban areas. As both grower sellers and wholesalers are interrelated and contributing to rural urban linkage, they were selected as two major strata while sampling. Amin bazaar was selected as the study area because it has 47% of land use devoted to agriculture (Calculated from GIS shape file of Detail Area Plan of Dhaka City). So, it was assumed that a large amount of flow of agricultural product is likely to occur from this area to urban area because of allocation of almost half of the land to agricultural land use, agricultural production would be high and surplus after consumption will be sold in the growth center. Information flow has been analyzed from the perspective mode of communication, frequency, relation with distance etc. In order to analyze the characteristics of commodity and monetary flow, information regarding land area ultized, profit earned, crop typology etc. were collected. Back ward and forward linkage was analyzed by gathering data regarding the location of buying equipment for agricultural production and selling place of agricultural crops of grower sellers and selling location of wholesalers. Location of buying equipment was not considered for wholesalers as they only buy and sell products and do not produce any using any equipment.

Achievement/Findings:

Rural urban linkage plays a crucial role in the amelioration of the rural economy via the process of rural urban linkage. Enlargement of farm size, commercialization of agricultural farms, agricultural transformation have a positive effect making rural linkage stronger as well as in the development of rural agriculture and economy. Joint partnership based cultivation of land may enable the farmers to cultivate on large parcel of land. Agricultural intensification by using modern technology, fertilizers, and HYV seeds will increase production and hence money flow to rural areas from urban areas. Policies may be taken for non-cereal products as they grow better than any cereal crops by providing special facilities, subsidy etc. Besides, ensuring required facilities for the growth center like storage required loading-unloading place etc, improved transport network can draw more grower sellers in the Amin bazar growth center. All these initiatives thus can contribute to strengthen rural urban linkage and effect growth of rural economy positively.
