Application of Geoelectrical Method to Study the Aquifer Response in BARInd Tract of Rajshahi

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The Barind Tract of Rajshahi comprises about 17 upazilas of which Nachole and its surroundings are the most affected area in respect ground water potential. Nine Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) were carried out in this area using maximum current electrode separation (AB) up to 300 meters. The apparent resistivity function of the field curve was transferred to resistivity transform function through filtering. Then the direct interpretation technique was applied to interpret the transform curves. The electrical investigation in general defines that the subsurface is composed of three different types of formation. The thickness of the top layer as interpreted from sounding data varied from 10 to 30 meter. The intermediate one is a composite sand layer of resistivity around 30 ohm-m whose thickness varied from 23 to 58 meter. This layer is supposed to be the main source of ground water. This sandy formation is overlying a clay basement whose thickness is still undetermined.

Objectives:

To examine the feasibility of the present aquifer condition of Barind Tract.

Methodology:

The Barind Tract lies in between latitudes 24°N and 25°30'N and longitudes 88°E and 89°E with a total area of 555,815 hectare. It is bounded in the north by the Bangladesh-India international boundary, in the east by the river Atrai, in the west by the river Ganges and in the south also by the river Ganges. The area comprises a part of the Bengal Basin, one of the major sedimentary basins of the world, situated tectonically in the stable shelf region. The landscape comprises mainly level in the eastern part, dissected and undulating in the western part. Dissection by valley occurs both at a short and long distance. In the dissected areas top of the landscape the summits are level, the slopes and valley sides are terraced. The nature and distribution of the surface sediments within the area has comprehensively been described by Morgan and Mc Intyre. The variation in the physiography indicates the variation in exposed geology. From the hydrological point of view, three types of sedimentary formation exist: (i) Dupi Tila Formation; an unexposed formation which serves as the exploitable aquifer, (ii) Modhupur Clay: is the oldest exposed sedimentary formation of pleistocene age and (iii) Alluvium. The elevation above mean sea level ranges from a minimum of 40 feet in the east to the maximum of 150 feet in the north west. In the course of the present work the D.C. Electrical resistivity method was used with the Schlumberger configuration using current electrode separation (AB) up to 300 meters. A total of nine locations are selected as shown in the location map. Each location is treated as a separate VES (Vertical Electrical Sounding) Number such as No.1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are represented the location Kachra, Amjoan, Vujoil, Nachole proper, Paschim Marzapur, Chatipur, Barenda, Diara and Mandumala. The VES-9 sounding point is made on the neighboring Tanore thana as shown in the location map. All the soundings are carried out in the middle of the March, 1991.

Achievement/Findings:

The interpreted results were correlated with the borelogs of the deep tubewells and it was clear that the geoelectrical parameter values could be used directly to study the subsurface formation. Hence the geoelectrical method could be applied to detect the composite sand formation which was generally considered to be the aquifer.
