Free and Bound Fatty Acids of A/o (aestuans - Olitorius) Jute and Its Comparison with Other Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Free and bound fatty acids of unretted bark and retted fibre of different stages of A/O (aestuans-olitorius) jute were identified by g.l.c. as their methylcster. Their relative proportions were determined. Stearic, Palmitic, Oleic, Linoleic, Linolenic, Myristic and Lauric acid were found as major fatty acids of unretted bark and retted fibre of A/O jute.

Objectives:

To identify the free and bound fatty acids of A/O (aestuans-olitorius) jute obtained from inter varietal cross of C. aestuans and C. oluorius.

Methodology:

Materials is described in the preceding paper. The samples 2B, 3B, 3R, 4B and 4R were extracted with 80% aqueous alcohol. These alcohol extracts were used throughout the investigation. The chemicals and solvents used in all preparative and analytical work were of standard reagent grade procured from E. Merck of Germany and BDH of England. Always distilled solvents were used. All evaporations were performed in rotary vacuum evaporator (Buchii, Switzerland) at temperature not exceeding 40°C. Gas liquid chromatography was conducted with pye-Unicam GCD gas chromatogram with a flame ionization detector and glass column (1.5 x 0.2 cm, i.d.). For separation of fatty acids a SE-30 column with temperature programme of 130-220°C with initial holding time 5 min., and rise of temperature 8° rnin^-1 was used. The nitrogen flow rate was 40 ml/min. A gumy mass obtained from the 80% aqueous alcohol extract of 2B (2.058g) was dissolved in minimum volume of distilled water and it was extracted with Pet-ether (b.p. 40-60°C 2 x 100 ml). The pet-ether soluble fraction thus obtained was evaporated to dryness (1.775g). Similarly 80% aqueous alcohol extract of 3B (5.619g), 3R (0.52g), 4B (3.17g) and 4R (0.30g) were extracted with Pet-ether (b.p. 40-60°C) separately and their amount of Pet-ether extract were given. The free and bound fatty acids of all the samples 2B, 3B, 3R and 4B were isolated and their amount was given. Due to very small amount of Pet-ether soluble fraction of 4R (0.05g) this was not used for isolation of free and bound fatty acids. Both the free and bound fatty acids of all the samples were converted into their methyl ester. All these methyl esters were then analyzed in g.l.c. using a packed column SE-30 by temperature programming. The free and bound fatty acids were identified and their relative proportions were given, respectively.

From all these observations, it is clear that between the unretted bark of 18 weeks old (3B) and its corresponding fibre (3R) the former contains less amount of total fatty acids, but comparing with all other varieties, retted fibre of 18 weeks old of A/O jute (3R) contains lowest amount of total fatty acids and the unsaturated acids are almost absent in this fibre (3R). The unsaturated fatty acids may easily be oxidized in light and thereby may deteriorate some qualities of jute products. So, the presence of fatly acid materials in jute create some problems in process industries. So, from the present findings, it may be concluded that low lignin content (Preceding paper) and the low fatty acid content may contribute significantly towards some qualities of the A/O jute. This suggests to explore the nature of the fibre of A/O jute for newer and wider uses.
