Physico-chemical Parameters of a Semi-intensively Managed Fish Pond

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted in a perennial (0.34 ha) pond of the Dhaka Cantonment area, known as the Signal pond.Fluctuations were observed in the values of the physico- chemical parameters of a semi- intensively managed fish pond. The degree of variability of each physical or chemical parameter, as measured by the coefficient of mean deviation, was compared with the variability of other parameters. The pH value of the pond water was found to have the lowest variability, while carbonate had the highest variability. Different pairs of variables had different relationships with each other as revealed by the relevant coefficients of correlation which were likely to have impacts on the pisciculture of the pond.

Objectives:

To assess some major physical and chemical parameters in a semi-intensively managed fish pond.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in a perennial (0.34 ha) pond in Dhaka Cantonment area, known as the Signal pond. It was irregularly shaped with non-uniform depth, the maximum depth being about 3 m. The bottom was full of mud and decaying materials. The pond had no inlet or outlet and was dependent upon rainfall for its water. The pond received monthly inputs in the form of compost, TSP, urea and oil cake. These inputs were supplied to increase the production of planktonic organism which constitute food for the fish. Besides, bread was supplied daily as fish feed. The quantities of these inputs supplied to the pond per month. It may be pointed out here that for a pond of the size of 0.34 ha, with a pH of water ranging between 7 and 7.8, the doses of urea and TSP were very much on the higher side. Sampling was done in the following three stations of the pond: Station I - Located on the northern side of the pond, Station II - Located on the southern side of the pond, Station III - Located in between Stations I and II. The air and water at the three stations were sampled monthly from May 1986 to April 1987 to generate data on the different physico- chemical parameters. Samples were taken at each station between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. Water and air temperature at the three stations were recorded by using centigrade thermometers. Transparency of water was measured by using a secchi disc. Water was collected from the surface of the pond during each sampling. The surface water sample was collected directly into bottles from the undisturbed surface. The present study was confined to the analysis of the physico- chemical parameters of the surface water only. Dissolved oxygen of the three stations was determined by the modified Azide Winkler method with drops count titration as per APHA (1970). Free carbon-di-oxide of various water samples was determined by volumetric titration with standard sodium solution using phenolphthalein as indicator (APHA 1976). Hydrogen ion-concentration or pH of surface water sample was determined by a 'Field Water Analysis Kit' of HACH Company, U.S.A. The carbonate and bicarbonate contents of the water were determined by volumetric titration with N/50 H₂SO₄ as per Welch (1952).

Achievement/Findings:

Itwas apparent from the present study that, the physico- chemical changes occurring in the pond were not likely to affect fish culture there to a great extent, at least at the semi-intensive level. Thus a similar strategy for fish culture could be adopted in ponds under similar circumstances.
