An Economic Analysis of Dryfish Marketing in Some Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Abstract nus study identified dryfish marketing channel, assessed cost and margin at different stages of marketing, marketing efficiency and suggested recommendation for the development of the marketing system. Data from Kuliarchar thana of Kishoreganj district and the dryfish markets of Kishoreganj and Mymensingh have been used. Producers generally sell their dryfish in the production season, mainly from farmgate (85%). After fishermen, the different intermediaries who enter into the marketing chain were Beparies, Aratders, Wholesalers and Retailers. In different kinds of dryfish, producer's share in consumer's price was 31% to 49%. Transportation and storage facilities was not satisfactory. Producers and intermediaries borrowed capital only from non-institutional SOW"Ce with a high interest rate (36% to 120%). For producing a ton of dryfish, total cost was Tk. 28719, gross return was Tk. 33949, and net return was Tk. 5230. From one ton dryfish, the total marketing margin of intermediaries was Tk. 56873, marketing cost was Tk. 22782 and profit was Tk. 34091.

Objectives:

(i) To identify the dryfish marketing channel. (ii) Assess cost and margin at different stages of marketing, (iii) Marketing efficiency and (iv) To draw recommendations for the development of marketing system, which will help in future research and policy formulation.

Methodology:

A total sample of 30 dryfish producers was selected from 5 different villages of Kuliarchar thana in Kishoreganj district. Five Beparies from Kuliarchar bazar, 4 Aratders from Kishoreganj Arat centre, 5 Wholesalers and 5 Retailers from Mymensingh town were selected purposively, which represents the intermediaries for this study. The samples were randomly selected and interviewed directly with tile help of a predesigned schedule to collect data on production cost, marketing cost and organizational features of tile market. Two schedule were used- one for the producers and tile other for tile intermediaries. The study covered tile period from March, 1989 to September, 1989. Data were mainly analyzed by descriptive method and were presented in tables by using average, percentage, etc.
