Studies on Some Quantitative Characters of Rice in Relation to Genotype-environment Interaction

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

All investigation of genotyge-environment interaction for some agronomical characters of eight inbred lines of rice (Oryza sativa L.) was made under the eight artificially created soil environments. Significant genotype-environment interactions were observed in all the materials investigated and the interaction was both linear and non-linear type. The effect of fertilizers was significant and the highest effect was found in the treatments of N and its combinations. The genotypes showed differential responses to the nutrients and the values of responses (b) ranged from-1.24±2.14 to 4.49± 1.29 for various traits. The genotypes were also heterogeneous in respect to their stability (S_d^-2). The correlation co-efficient of mean (YP), response (b)and stability (S_d^-2) of a character was non-significant in all the cases except in between x and b for yield/plant (VP) and tiller number (TN) and in between x and S_d^-2 for tiller number where the association was significant. Correlation co-efficient of b was significant only in between primary branch number/panicle (PB/P) and spikelet number/panicle (SN/P) but the association was negative; while for S_d^-2 the associations in between panicle length and tiller number and in between kernel number/panicle (KN/P) and spikelet number/panicle were significant.

Objectives:

To investigate the nature of genotype-environment interaction and the response patterns of eight inbred lines of rice (Oryza sativa L.).

Methodology:

The materials used consisted of eight rice varieties of which three were local (Naizersail, Badshabhog and Kataribhog) and five were exotic (Chinese, IR-8, IR-532, IR- 20 and IR-5). The seeds of all the varieties were germinated in earthen pots (one pot per variety) in July,1977. At the age of of 30 days, the seedlings were transplanted in 30cm earthen pots (one pot per plant) containing eight different nutritional treatments of N, P, K and their possible combinations including zero dose. The pots were arranged in three replications each of which included 256 pots having 4 pots per population per dose of treatment. The pots containing different treatments were randomly arranged within a replication and they were placed in open air and under direct sunlight in the Botanical Research Garden, University of Rajshahi. The doses of fertilizers applied were 5g of urea for N, 5g of trip!e-super.phosphate (T.S.P.) for P and 2.5 g of muriatic of potash for K and they were applied partly at the time of transplantation, partly at the time of tiller initiation and finally at the time of flowering. Data were collected on individual plant basis and analysis were done on the mean value of four plants per treatment per variety per replication. After harvest the data were recorded on panicle length (PL) in cm, primary branch number panicle(PB/P),spikelet number/panicle (SN/P) kernel number/panicle (KN/P), 100 kernel weight (100KW) in gm, yield/plant (Yp) in gm and tiller number (TN).

Mean S (x) was highly correlated with response (b) in YP and TN and with S_d^-2 in TN only. Most of the correlations were non-significant suggesting x, b and S_d^-2 are independent to one another. The correlation coefficient of b and S_d^-2among the characters were non-significant in most of the character combinations. For b the association was significant only in between PB/P and SN/P but the nature of association was negative. For S_d^-2 the association in between PL and N, in between YP and TN and in between KN/P and SN/P was significant.
