Laboratory of Plant Ecology, Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh.

An experiment was conducted at the Field Laboratory of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period extended from November 2010 to March 2011 to study the effect of weeding on the growth and yield of three lentil varieties viz. BINA masur-1, BINA masur-2 and BINA masur-3. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Growth and yield of lentil varieties have significantly been affected with a single hand weeding on 40 days after sowing (DAS). A single weeding operation significantly improved the plant height, number of branches plant-1, leaf area index, total dry matter, yield components like number of pods m-2, number of pods plant-1, number of seeds pod-1, number of seed plant-1, seed weight plant-1, seed yield, and harvest index as compared to the unweeded condition. However, seed yield did not show any significant variation due to combination of varieties and weeding regimes. The results indicate that, weeds in natural condition (unweeded) adversely affect lentil production and seed yield; whereas single hand weeding enhanced the growth, development and finally grain yield of lentil crop.

To find out the effect of weeding on the morpho-physiological characteristics, yield attributes and seed yield of three varieties of lentil.

The experiment was carried out at the Field Laboratory (24.75'N latitude and 90.50" E longitude, with an elevation of 18 m above sea level) of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from November 2010 to March 2011 to study the effect of weeding on the performance of three varieties of lentil (Lens culinaris L.). The experimental area experiences a sub-tropical climate that belongs to Old Brahmaputra Floodplain (AEZ 9). The land was medium high having sandy loam soil and belongs to Sonatala series under the non-calcareous dark grey floodplain soil with pH 6.6. Well ploughed land was fertilized with urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MOP) and gypsum @ 30, 100, 50 and 60 kg ha-1, respectively (BINA, 2008). Three lentil varieties viz. BINA masur-1, BINA masur-2 and BINA masur-3 were used. The crop canopy of those lentil varieties is characterized with erect, bushy and a semi dwarf structure and pods contain mostly two seeds. The number of the experimental treatment was six which consisted of two weeding regimes (weeding once and unweeding) with the aforesaid three lentil varieties. The experiment was laid out by a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 3m×2m. Distance between plots to plots was 50 cm. Row to row and plant to plant distance within a row were 30 and 10 cm, respectively. The seeds were collected from Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh. The seeds with 95 percent germination capacity were sown in line manually by hand on 11 November 2010. Immediately after sowing the seeds were covered with the loose soil by hand. After seedling emergence the thinning operation was done to maintain the appropriate plant to plant distance in the row. Weeds were controlled once manually on 40 days after sowing (DAS) for the selected plots only as per experimental design while the remaining plots were unweeded throughout the crop season. Five randomly selected plants from each plot were uprooted carefully keeping with maximum roots in order to record data on crop growth traits like plant height, branch number per plant, leaf area index (LAI) and total dry matter starting from 40 DAS till to maturity of crops with 15 days interval. Concurrently, all weeds were uprooted from randomly selected area of 50×50 cm2 from each plot to record data on weed dry matter. The crop and weed samples were dried in an electric oven at 80±2oC until a constant weight. Then the dry weights of those plant samples were taken with an electronic balance. Days to crop maturity were recorded by counting the number of days starting from sowing to final harvest. Twenty five randomly selected plants were harvested from each plot at physiological maturity to record data on yield contributing characters like number of pod/m2, number of pods/plant, number of seed/pod, number of seed/plant, seed weight/plant and 1000-seed weight, and yield. Harvest index was determined (oven dry basis) as “seed yield/biological yield”. The collected data were analyzed statistically using the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) technique with the help of a computer package-MSTAT Programme and the mean differences were adjudged with Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

It is concluded from the present study that a single hand weeding results highest seed yield of lentil. Weed may compete with the crop plant for light, nutrient, space and other natural resources that has resulted reduced growth and seed yield. On the other hand, Binamasur-3 variety produced highest seed yield than the other two varieties studied.
