Studies on Dormancy and Sprouting Behaviour of Some Potato Germplasm Under Natural Storage Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Storage behaviour of 16 promising potato genotypes against two standard varieties as check were studied under natural storage condition for 150 days at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur during 1992-1993. Genotypes like 86.844, 86.315 and 88.163 exhibited extended dormancy varying from 118 to 125 days while the genotypes 87.272, 87.494, 87.194, 78.221 and 87.410 had short dormancy varying from 77 to 84 days. Sprout length, sprout weight and sprouting efficiency were higher but number of growing sprouts were lower in short dormants and vice versa in extended dormants. Tuber weight loss was gradual for the first 90 days, thereafter, it registered a sudden increase. Short dormants shrunk earlier than the extended ones.

Objectives:

To study the dormancy and sprouting behaviour of some advanced potato germplasm in ordinary storage environment.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur, Bangladesh during two consecutive potato storage periods i. e., March to July of 1992 and 1993. Freshly harvested 20 medium sized (35-45 mm diameter) healthy tubers of 16 promising lines along with two standard varieties named Cardinal and Diamant were collected for each replication. Tubers were shade-dried for six hours prior to the commencement of the experiment. Thereafter, the tubers were cleaned, weighed and stored in insect proof netted boxes placed under well ventilated and diffused high condition for 150 days. Identity of each tuber was maintained by writing the numbers on tuber surface. Ascorbic acid (AA) content of the potato genoytypes and standard checks was evaluated initially by following indophenol method. The Experiment was replicated four timers in a randomized block design. Observation on weight loss was made monthly and sprouting behaviour was recorded weekly for 150 days. The occurrence of 50% visible sprouting was considered as the termination of dormancy. The number of growing sprouts, length of apical sprout and shrinkage using a arbitrary scale (1 = firm and 10 = shriveled) were recorded at 105, 150 and 120 days, respectively. Sprout weight, tuber weight and final ascorbic acid content were determined at the termination of the study, and the sprouting efficiency was calculated by dividing the sprout weight by tuber weight. The temperature and relative humidity of the experimental place were recorded during the course of investigation.

Achievement/Findings:

A progressive weight loss of tubers during the storage period was observed which varied significantly within the potato genotypes and varieties in both the years. The increase in weight loss was more or less gradual for the first 90 days (11.6% in 1992 and 13.3% in 1993) but it exhibited a sudden increase in the next 60 days (25.6% and 26.8%, respectively) i.e., after 120 days of storing. It is clear that the genotypes 86.844, 88.163 and 86.315 were found superior as they are less evaporative and lost only 5% weight up to three months of storing. The same were also found in dormant up to three months of storing showing their good keeping quality.
