Exploration and Collection of Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Exploration and collection of multicrop germplasm were conducted in sixteen districts namely Chittagong, Noakhali, Jessore, Satkhira, Bhola, Gopalganj, Rangamati, Sirajganj, Jhinaidah, Magura, Pabna, Gazipur, Narail, Faridpur, Thakurgaon, and Nilphamari. The local landraces and primitive crop cultivars/germplasm were mostly collected including indigenous vegetable and other crop plants. A total of 466 germplasm of 56 different crops were collected during 2013-14.

Objectives:

To collect germplasm of different crops and to save the germplasm from extinction, to characterize and to identify the specific traits for crop improvement programme

Methodology:

During 2013-14, exploration and collection was carried out in Chittagong, Noakhali, Jessore, Satkhira, Bhola, Gopalganj, Rangamati, Sirajganj, Jhinaidah, Magura, Pabna, Gazipur, Norail, Faridpur, Thakurgaon, and Nilphamari. However, the collector’s team was equipped with altimeter, compass, cameras, hand lens, seed, knife, scissors, drying sheet, pencil, stapler etc. The necessary information such as donor’s name, altitude, latitude of the respective crop region was recorded on the passport data sheet. The samples were collected as seeds and fruits from individual plant or population. Sites for collecting the germplasm in target area were selected considering the nature of crop, availability of germplasm and communication.

Achievement/Findings:

A total of 466 germplasm different crops were collected. Germplasm have been collected of different crops from Chittagong, Noakhali, Jessore, Satkhira, Bhola, Gopalganj, Rangamati, Sirajganj, Jhinaidah, Magura, Pabna, Gazipur, Narail, Faridpur, Thakurgaon, and Nilphamari districts of the country. Collected germplasm will be characterized for further utilization in crop improvement programme and conserved in mid and long term storage facilities for future generation.
