Characterization of Chickpea Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Plant Genetic Resources Centre, BARI Joydebpur, Gazipur during the Rabi season of 2013-14 to study the variability of 47 accessions of chickpea. Ten qualitative and seven quantitative characteristics were studied. Qualitative variations where predominantly present in all characters. The first flower initiation was found earlier (94 days) in 14 accessions. The highest 100 seed weight per plant (30g) was observed in BD-6632 and the lowest was found in BD- 6761(8g). The highest CV was found in seed weight per plant (43.32%) followed by number of pods per plant (30.11%) and the lowest CV% in days to harvest

Objectives:

To characterize for identifying the accessions for its specific traits and to use in future breeding programme

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Plant Genetic Resources Centre, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during the Rabi season of 2013-14. Unit plot size was 4m x 1m and seeds were sown in rows with spacing 60 cm. The seeds of 47 accessions were sown on 20 November, 2013. Insecticide such as ripcord, admire were used and other intercultural operations were carried out as and when necessary. Five Plants were selected randomly from three rows of each accession. Data were recorded on 10 qualitative and 7 quantitative characters according to IBPGR descriptors.

Qualitative characters of 47 Chickpea accessions were characterized. Anthocyanin was absent, stems and leaves green for 15 accessions where low anthocyanin, stems and leaves partly light purple were observed for 25 accessions, high anthocyanin, stems and leaves predominantly purple for 6 accessions, highly purple for 1 accession were observed. Plant canopy height was lightly pubescent for 22 accessions, pubescent for 16 accessions where densely pubescent for 9 accessions was observed. Growth habit was erect for 4 accessions, semi-spreading for 14 accessions, spreading for 24 accessions, where prostrate for 5 accessions. Leaf type was normal for 16 accessions, simple for 29 accessions, multi-pinnate for 2 accessions, Number of leaflets per leaf was within 7-9 for 2 accessions, 9-11 for 15 accessions and 11-13 for 30 accessions was observed. Leaflet size was small for 24 accessions where medium for 20 accessions, large for 3 was observed. Flower colour was blue for 2 accessions, light blue for 12 accessions, dark pink for 1 accessions, pink for 10 accessions, light pink for 4 accessions and white- pink striped for 18 accessions was observed. Seed shape was angular; rams head for 6 accessions irregular rounded owl’s head 30 accessions and pea shaped smooth round 11 accessions was observed. Testa texture was rough for 28 accessions, smooth for 13 accessions where tuberculated for 6 accessions. Seed color was black for 2 accessions, brown for 25 accessions and light brown for 19 accessions. Among the accession 30% showed the early flower initiation while 70% late flowering. Plant canopy height recorded 11.74 to 92.86 cm. The days to pod harvest were 143 days. The number of seeds per pod varied 1 to 2. The number of pods per plant varied 33(BD-6662) to 343(BD-6760). The highest seed weight per plant (56g) was recorded from BD-6616 while the lowest (5.6g/plant) was observed in BD- 6675. The highest 100 seed weight (30g) found in BD-6632 and the lowest was found in BD-6779 (8g). The highest CV was found in seed weight per plant (43.32%) followed by number of pods per plant (30.11%) and the lowest CV in days to harvest.
