On-farm Trial of Sesame Varieties in Coastal Area of Khulna

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out in the farmer's field at the MLT site, Dacope during 2011-12 to find out the suitable sesame variety for cultivation in coastal saline area. The experiment was laid out in RCB deign with three replications. Performance of three sesame varieties viz. BARI til 3, BARI til 4 and a local variety was studied. The seeds were sown on 14 March, 2012 in 30 cm apart solid lines. Among the varieties, BARI til- 4 produced the highest seed yield (990.00 kg/ha), while the lowest yield was recorded with the local variety (728.33 kg/ha).

Objectives:

To find out the suitable sesame variety for cultivation in coastal saline area.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the MLT site, Dacope during 2011-12. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 5m x 3m. The land was fertilized with 55-28-23-19-1-2 kg NPKSZnB/ha. Half of urea and all of other fertilizers were applied at the time of final land preparation. Rest half of urea was top dressed during 25-30 days after sowing. Seeds were sown on 14 March 2012 in 30 cm apart solid lines. After emergence, seedlings were thinned out and plant to plant distance was maintained 5 cm. The land was irrigated two times. The salinity of irrigation water was recorded. All kinds of intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The crop was harvested on 29 may 2012.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the varieties, BARI til- 4 produced the highest seed yield (990.00 kg/ha), while the lowest yield was recorded with the local variety (728.33 kg/ha).In respect of growth and yield, BARI til 4 performed better in the saline areas of Dacope, Khulna.
