Effect of Mulching and Irrigation on the Yield of Okra

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the MLT site, Dacope, Khulna during 2011-2012 in kharif season. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 3 replications. There were eight treatment combinations viz. T₁: No irrigation with mulch, T₂: No irrigation without mulch, T₃: Irrigation at vegetative stage with mulch, T₄: Irrigation at vegetative stage without mulch, T₅: Irrigation at vegetative + flower initiation stages with mulch, T₆: Irrigation at vegetative + flower initiation stages without mulch, T₇: Irrigation at vegetative + flower initiation + 20 days after flower initiation stages with mulch, T₈: Irrigation at vegetative + flower initiation + 20 days after flower initiation stages without mulch. The highest yield (13.82) was recorded from the treatment, T₇ where irrigation was applied at vegetative + flowering + 20 days after flower initiation stages with mulch. The lowest yield (10.05) was found in T₂ treatment, where neither irrigation nor mulch was used.

Objectives:

To find out the suitable mulch material and maximize the yield of okra in the saline areas of Dacope, Khulna.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the MLT site, Dacope, Khulna during kharif-l season, 2011-2012. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 3 replications. There were eight treatment combinations viz. T₁: No irrigation with mulch, T₂: No irrigation without mulch, T₃: Irrigation at vegetative stage with mulch, T₄: Irrigation at vegetative stage without mulch, T₅: Irrigation at vegetative + flower initiation stages with mulch, T₆: Irrigation at vegetative + flower initiation stages without mulch, T₇: Irrigation at vegetative + flower initiation + 20 days after flower initiation stages with mulch, T₈: Irrigation at vegetative + flower initiation + 20 days after flower initiation stages without mulch. Okra variety' Komol' was used in the experiment. The unit plot size was 3.0 x 2.8 m. The land was fertilized with 69-20-75 kg NPK/ha. All the fertilizers except urea were applied as basal during final land preparation. Urea was top dressed in three equal splits at 20, 35 and 60 DAS. Seeds of okra were sown on 15 March 2012 at 60 x 40 cm spacing. The crop was irrigated eight times with kuni water as per requirement of the crop and salinity of the water was recorded. Weeding was done four times. Harvesting was started at 05 May 2012 and continued until 07 June 2012. Data on yield and yield components were recorded and analyzed statistically. Mean separation was done by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering higher yield, it can be concluded that irrigation applied at vegetative + flower initiation + 20 days after flower initiation stages with mulch is the best for cultivation of okra in the coastal saline areas.
