Effect of Supplemental Copper on the Nutrient Utilization and Copper Status of Indigenous Bull Calves

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of supplemental copper on the feed intake, nutrient utilization growth performance, Cu absorption, Cu balance and blood, Cu status in indigenous growing bull calves. Four male indigenous growing cattle of about 14 months old weighing 88.75±14.25 kg were used with four diets consisting of rice straw, dhal grass, wheat broken, rice polish, til oil cake and common salt containing four levels of Cu sulfate (9.22,15.22, 34.22 and 59.22 mg Cu/kg diet for T₀, T₁,T₂ and T₃ respectively) in a 4x4 Latin Square Design having four feeding trials of 21 days each with a 7 days adjustment periods prior to each trial. The results showed that Cu supplementation had no significant effect (p>0.05) on feed intake, live weight gain, feed and protein conversion efficiency, apparent digestibility of nutrients (DM, OM, CP, CF, EE and NFE), digestible nutrients (DCP, DCF, DEE and DNFE) and TDN. On the other hand, Cu balance (g/d) and its retention (g/100 g) increased significantly (p<0.01). Results also showed that serum Cu concentration increased significantly (P<0.01) with the increasing level of Cu supplementation. From this experiment, it can be concluded that the supplementation of Cu improves only Cu retention and blood Cu status other than live weight gain, feed intake, nutrient digestibility, TDN, and apparent and true absorption of Cu.

Objectives:

To investigate the effect of supplementation of Cu sulfate as a source of Cu on feed intake, growth, digestibility and nutritive values of the diets, Cu absorption, Cu balance and serum Cu concentration in growing bull calves.

Methodology:

Four male indigenous growing bull calves of about 14 months old weighing 88.75±14.25 kg were used in a 4x4 Latin Square Design (LSD) with four diets in four periods each of 21 days. Four experimental diets were formulated for feeding the animals. The diet T_o consisted of 56.20% rice straw, 13.81 % dhal grass, 14.88% wheat bran, 10.00% rice polish, 4.82% til oil cake and 0.30% common salt having 8.68% CP and 8.14 MJ ME/kg DM. The diet To contained 9.22 mg Cu/kg diet. In addition to To; T₁, T₂and T₃were supplemented with 6, 25 and 50 mg Cu/kg from Cu sulfate thus diets T₁, T₂and T₃ contained 15.22,34.22 and 59.22 mg Cu/kg respectively. Daily feed intake was recorded throughout the trial periods. In order to determine the digestibility of the proximate components and Cu balance of four experimental diets, four-time metabolism trial was conducted for a period of 7 days at the end of each trial. Representative samples of feed, faeces and left over of feed were subjected to chemical analysis for determination of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), crude fiber (CF), ether extract (EE), ash and nitrogen free extract (NFE). Copper content of the samples (feed, faeces and urine) and blood serum was determined according to the method of Page et af. (1982) by using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The data were analyzed using "MSTAT" statistical program to compute analysis of variance (ANOVA) for a Latin Square Design (LSD). Least significance difference (LSD) test was done to compare treatment means for different parameters.
