An experiment was conducted to determine the chemical composition, phenolic compounds, calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) contents, in vitro organic matter digestibility and energy content of Leucaena trichandra (Ipil-ipil-L), Leucaena diversifolia (Ipil-ipil-2), Calliandra calothyrsus (Calliandra) and Gliricidia sepium (Gliricidia) foliages. The dry matter, crude protein, neutral detergent fibre, and acid detergent fibre contents in these foliages were similar (P>0.05) but organic matter (OM) in Gliricidia was significantly higher (P<0.05) than other foliages. The content of Ca in Gliricidia was higher (p<0.0 I) compared to Ipil-ipil-I, Ipil-ipil-2 and Calliandra foliages while the P content was not significantly different (P>0.05). The concentration of total phenols in these four tree foliages were similar (p>0.05). Total tannins in Ipilipil-l and condensed tannins in Calliandra were found higher (P<0.01) than other foliages, the concentration of condensed tannins was less than the predicted value of 5% to cause deleterious effect on animal. The estimated in vitro OM digestibility in Gliricidia was higher (p<0.0 I) compared to Ipil-ipil-1, Ipil-ipil-2 and Calliandra foliages. There was no difference in metabolisable energy content of four foliages. The results suggest that these foliages are of higher nutritional values and may be used to feed ruminants.

To evaluate the nutritional values and presence of phenolic compounds of four legume tree foliages for the development of forage based livestock production system.

Freshly flushed leaves of approximately 3 months old were collected from the top, of the branch of Leucaena trichandra (Ipil-ipil-l), Leucaena diversifolia (Ipil-ipil-2), Calliandra calothyrsus (Calliandra) and Gliricidia sepium (Gliricidia) of 4 years old trees grown in Goat and Sheep farm, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The representative samples were freeze dried and ground through 1.0 mm and 0.5 mm sieve for analysis. Chemical composition of freeze dried samples for dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM) and crude protein (CP) were estimated according to the methods of AOAC (1984). Neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent fibre (ADF) were estimated following the methods of Faichney and White (1983). Calcium (Ca) and Phosphorus (P) contents were measured by flame photometer and spectrophotometer (660 nm) respectively. Total phenols were estimated by Folin-Ciocalteu reagent method and total tannin was determined by subtracting the value of poly vinylpyrolidone (PVPP) bind tannins from total phenols. Condensed tannin was determined by oxidation of condensed tannin in butanol-HCI reagent method. These analyses were conducted according to laboratory manual of quantification of tannins in tree foliage. In vitro organic matter digestibility of foliage samples was carried out. In this technique rumen liquor was collected from the bulls immediately after slaughter, strained and collected in CO2 filled thermo flask preheated at 39°C and brought to laboratory. The collected liquor was mixed with the buffer medium in a water bath at 39°C. Approximately 200 gm forage sample in duplicate was placed in 100 ml syringe and 30 ml of rumen liquor was pipetted into each syringe and incubated under anaerobic condition at 39°C for 24 hours. The net gas production was estimated and corrected with the gas production of standard hay for differences in sample weight (mg DM). The in vitro organic matter digestibility (OMD) and metabolizable energy (ME) were calculated from the gas volume (Gv). The data were subjected to statistical analysis using analysis of variance in completely randomized design.

Based on the parameters studied it may be concluded that these four leguminous foliages may be used either as sale feed or supplementation to ruminants diets for nutrients supply and productivity of animal.
