Screening of Crops/varieties Against Different Level of Salinity in Coastal Area

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted during Rabi season of 2011-2012 at Killar Char, Gangchil under Companygonj Upazilla and Hazirhat under Sadar upazilla near the river where seasonal saline water intrusion occurs regularly. The objectives were to evaluate the performance of selected crops/varieties and to select varieties suitable for offshore coastal saline areas. Fourteen rabi crops were tested at different levels of salinity. BARI Sarisha 15 (Mustard) and BARI Tishi 1 (Linseed) produced 894 kg ha^-1 and 675 kg ha^-1 seed yield, respectively. Salinity level above or around 8.0 dS m^-1was most harmful for crop growth and survivability. Groundnut (BARI Chinabadam 8) and Mungbean (BARl Mung 6) were badly affected to higher salinity (10.12-11.43 dS m^-1). Chilli, Batishak, Garlic, Wheat, Cowpea and sunflower could be grown successfully up to 7-8 dS m^-1level of salinity.

Objectives:

2. To select suitable crops/varieties for the saline coastal areas.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during rabi season of 2011-2012 at Killar Char, Companygonj and Hazirhat, Sadar upazilla near the river where seasonal saline water intrusion occurs every year. Fourteen crops viz., Mustard (BARI Sarisha 5), Linseed (BARI Tishi 1), Batishak (BARI Batishak 1), Garlic (BARI Rashun 1), Wheat (BARI Ghom 25), Harley (DHL 15), Sunflower (Kironi), Chilli (Local), S.potato (Local), G.nut (BARI Chinabadam 8), Soybean (BARI Soybean 5), Kaon (Local), Mungbean (BARI Mung 6) and Cow pea (Local) were tested. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 3 replications having unit plot size of one bigha. The crops were sown during 5 to 10 December 2011. Recommended spacing and fertilizer doses were used for each crop. Weeding and other intercultural operations were done as and when needed. During the experimental period soil samples were collected for 6 times and their salinity levels were measured. The crops were harvested during 15 January to 10 May 2012. Only yield data were collected and analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Groundnut (BARI Chinabadarn 8), Soybean (BARI Soybean 5) and Mungbean (BARI 6) were found to be badly affected at higher level of salinity (10.12-11.43 dS m^-1). BARI Sarisha 15 (Mustard), BARI Tishi 1 (Linseed), Sweet potato and Chilli could be grown successfully at higher level of salinity prevailing at the riverside areas of Killar Char, Ganngchil under Companygonj Upazilla. Chilli, Batishak, Garlic, Wheat, Cow pea and Sunflower could be grown successfully up to 7-8 dS/m of salinity at greater part of Subornachar and sadar Upazilla under Noakhali district.
