Intercropping of Garlic with Watermelon in Coastal Saline Area

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment on inter cropping of garlic with watermelon was conducted at the village of Karamatpur and Amanatgonj under Subornachar Upazilla of Noakhali during rabi season, 2011-2012. The objectives were to utilize inter-space of watermelon field effectively with inter cropping of garlic. The highest marketable fruit yield of watermelon was obtained 36.10 t/ha from Watermelon + BARI Rashun- 2 treatment, whereas it was 34.32 t/ha in sole watermelon. Gross return (Tk. 339900/ha) and net return (Tk. 23200/ha) were found highest in Watermelon + BARl Rashun- 2 treatment and the lowest was in sole watermelon treatment. The same highest LER (1.04) was recorded in Watermelon + BARI Rashun- 1 and Watermelon + BARI Rashun- 2. BCR was higher (3.50) in sale watermelon than inter cropping system.

Objectives:

To utilize inter-space of watermelon field effectively with inter cropping of garlic.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during rabi season of 2011-2012 at FSRD site, Karamatpur and Amanatgonj under Subornachar Upazilla. Sole watermelon (var. Glory), watermelon + local garlic, watermelon + BARI Rashun- 1 and watermelon + BARI Rashun- 2 were studied with three dispersed replication at the farmers fields. The unit plots were about half bigha for each farmer. Watermelon was planted at 2 m x 2 m spacing and garlic was planted as inter crop in the watermelon field at 30 cm x 15 cm spacing. The land was fertilized with 10 ton of decomposed cow dung and inorganic fertilizer at the rate of 93-35- 125-18 kg N PKS/ha (FRG, 2005). All cow dung, P, S, half of MoP and 1/3 urea were applied at the time of final land preparation. Remaining MoP and Urea were applied at two equal installments at 20 and 40 days after seeding. Watermelon seeds were sown during 25-28 December 2011 and garlic was sown during 3-5 January 2012. The crop was irrigated by jar thrice during the whole cropping period. Weeding and other intercultural operations were done as and when needed. A systematic insecticide (Cypermethene) was sprayed at seedling stage to control aphids and thrips. Garlic was harvested during 25 March to 3 April 2012 and watermelon was also harvested during 5 - 12 April 2012. The mean yield data from three farmers' fields were recorded and analyzed statistically. Gross return and variable cost were calculated considering the prices of watermelon seed: Tk. 12000.00/kg, local garlic seed: Tk. 50.00/kg, BARI Rashun- 1 & -2 seed: Tk. 70.00/kg, Urea: Tk. 20.00/kg, TSP: Tk. 22.00/kg, MoP: Tk. 15.00/kg and gypsum: Tk. 12.00/kg. The other variable costs required for land preparation, sowing, weeding, insecticide, harvesting costs were also included. Selling price of Watermelon was Tk 8.00/kg and that of garlic was Tk. 35.00/kg for all varieties.

Achievement/Findings:

The results revealed that Watermelon + BARI Rashun- 2 treatment might be considered as the best inter crop combination. Garlic should be sown in mid December.
