A field trial was conducted at the farmer's field of FSRD site Kadamshahar, Godagari, Rajshahi during rabi season of 2013-2014 with an aim to observe the effects of tillage methods and crop residue incorporation on soil moisture retention and to increase the crop productivity by using residual soil moisture in High Barind Tract (HBT) under chickpea- maize- T.aman cropping pattern. There were three tillage methods, such as- T1 = strip tillage (ST), T2 = bed planting (BP) and T3 = conventional tillage (CT) and three residue management practices viz. M1 = farmers practices, M2 = 50% residue retention and M3 = 100% residue retention were tested in RCBD design with three replications. Soil moisture depleted with the progress of time and intensity of dryness prevailing at High Barind Tract. The significantly higher soil moisture retention was observed in the strip tillage method at 0-15 cm soil depth during the chickpea growing season, followed by conventional tillage whereas the lowest soil moisture was recorded in bed planting method. Tillage methods had no significant effect on the yield of the first crop chickpea. The second crop maize also did not show significant results either for tillage methods or residue incorporation and their interactions although a positive trend of improvement was observed.

  2. To increase crop productivity by using residual soil moisture in High Barind Tract (HBT) under chickpea- maize- T.aman cropping pattern.

A field trial was conducted at the farmer's field of FSRD site Kadamshahar, Godagari, Rajshahi during rabi season 2013-2014. Three tillage methods viz., T1- strip tillage, T2- bed planting and T3- conventional tillage in combination with residue management practices viz., M1-farmers practices, M2- 50% residue retention and M3-100% residue retention were distributed in a RCBD with three replications. As chickpea was the first crop therefore no residue was added. The area of individual plot was 5 m x 4 m. The variety BARI chola-9 for chickpea was used in this study. Before initiation of the experiment, initial soil samples were collected and analyzed. The recommended dose of P K S Zn B @ of 19-30-15-1.5-0.5 kg/ha were used as per STB. All fertilizers except urea were applied as basal according to individual plot at final land preparation. For N supplement, Rhizobium inoculum @ 50 g kg-1 seed was used. Chickpea were sown in line, maintaining 30 cm with continuous sowing on 24 November 2013 and harvested on 20 March, 2014. Intercultural operations viz. weeding and pesticide spray were done in order to normal plant growth. During kharif-I season, the plots were prepared for maize cultivation. As per treatments chickpea residue was incorporated into soil. As per STB, a dose of N P K S Zn B @ of 293-65-98-46-3-1 kg/ha were used for hybrid maize. All P S Zn Band 2/3rd K were applied as basal dose during final land preparation. The urea was applied in three equal splits, 5 days after germination, stem elongation stage (8-10 leaf stage) and at taselling stage. The rest of K was applied along with second dose of N at stem elongation stage. The seeds of maize (BARI HM-7) were sown in line @45 kg/ha with 75 cm x 25 cm spacing on 25 March, 2014 and harvested on 6 July, 2014. Data on yield component was collected from randomly selected 10 plants from each unit plot. For yield data, whole plot was harvested at maturity and the recorded data was converted to tone per hectare. The collected data were statistically analyzed by F-test to examine the treatment effects and the mean differences were adjudged by Least Significant Difference Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984) and ranking was indicated by letters. The software package MSTAT-C was followed for statistical analysis.

From the first year result it may be concluded that strip tillage with residue incorporation is helpful in increasing soil water retention providing with higher crop productivity.
