Regional Yield Trial of Selected Beta Carotene Rich Tomato Lines

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Regional yield trial (RYT) were conducted at different locations (Six ARS and RARS) at six locations of BARI which include Joydebpur, Jamalpur, Akberpur, Ishurdi, Hathazari and Potuakhali in the winter season of 2014-15 to evaluate the performance of selected beta-carotene rich tomato lines. Selected three beta-carotene rich tomato lines viz.: GBT037, GBT053 and GBT056 were selected for this study with BARI Tomato 7 was considered as check. The lines were similar for their response to marketable fruits per plant (MF/Pl), and marketable yield per hectare (MY/ha) when data of different locations was combined. All the lines had closer MF/Pl (25.78 – 26.67) as the check variety (26.46) at combined data. GBT037 produced very closer yield (88.10 t/ha) compeer to check variety (87.87 t/ha) but other line GBT053 was lower (82.04) at combined data. The lowest degree of virus infection was observed in GBT037 (4.16%), while the highest (8.33%) virus infection was recorded from the tomato line GBT056. The line GBT037 and GBT 056 exhibited the highest mean yield (88.10 t/ha) over locations with good adaptability. Therefore, the experiment may be repeated to confirm the results.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of selected beta-carotene rich tomato lines to develop high yielding and diseases resistant beta carotene contained tomato varieties.

Methodology:

Regional yield trial (RYT) were conducted at different locations (Six ARS and RARS) which include Joydebpur, Jamalpur, Akberpur, Ishurdi, Hathazari and Potuakhali , BARI during winter season of the year 2014-15. Selected three beta-carotene rich tomato lines viz.: GBT037, GBT053 GBT056 and BARI Tomato 7 as check were selected for this study. The seeds of above mentioned lines were sown in the seedbed on 21 Oct. to 15 Nov., 2014 at above location. Unfortunately BARI Tomato 7 fails to germinate. About thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in the main plot. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications having plot size of 4.8x1 m providing plant spacing of 60x40 cm having double row per bed and 12 plants per row and 24 plants per plot. The unit plot and blocks both were separated by 50 cm. The crop was fertilized with cow dung 10 ton, N 253kg, P 90kg, K 125kg, S 22 kg, Zn 5.40 kg and B 2 kg per ha, respectively. Half of the amount of cow dung and K, entire amount of P, S, Zn and B were applied during land preparation. The remaining half of the cow dung was applied during pit preparation. The rest of K and entire urea were applied at three equal installments at 21, 35 and 50 days after transplanting. Plant protection, irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data on days to first and 50% flowering, plant height at last harvest, days to maturity, number of fruit /plant, average fruit weight, fruit length and diameter, fruit yield /plant, yield /ha and , percent virus infection (at 45 DAS, 60 DAS and 75 DAS) were recorded. The collected data on aforementioned parameters was statistically analyzed and the mean separation was calculated following least significant difference (LSD) at 0.05 level of probability (Zamanet al., 1982).

The line GBT037 and GBT 056 exhibited the highest mean yield (88.10 t/ha) over locations with good adaptability. Therefore, the experiment may be repeated to confirm the results.
