Regional Yield Trial of Advanced Lines of Tomato in Winter

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study consisting of four lines of tomato and BARI Tomato 14 as a check variety was conducted at four locations of BARI which include Joydebpur, Jamalpur, Akberpur and Potuakhali in the winter season of 2014-15. All the lines had higher marketable fruits per plant (42-47) than the check variety (41) at combined data. All the lines produced higher yield (72.82 – 80.99 t/ha) than the check variety (72.43 t/ha) at combined data. Line AVTOV 1010 was maximum yielder (80.99 t/ha) at combined data. No virus incidence was observed in any of the liens (0.0%) while the check variety 15% incidence at Joydebpur location under field condition. Among the lines, AVTOV1005 and 1010 showed better performance for resistance to bacterial wilt, TYLCV, fusarium wilt, tobacco mosaic virus under inoculated condition at AVRDC. These were also good for lycopene content, fruit shape and growth habit. Therefore, necessary steps can be taken for releasing these two lines as OP varieties.

Objectives:

To select suitable lines of tomato for varietal release with high yield, better quality and wide adaptability across the country.

Methodology:

The study consisted of four lines of tomato and BARI Tomato 14 as a check. Of these, In Potuakhali (AVTOV 1005 and Akberpur location (AVTOV 1005 and 1008) seeds were not supplied due to unavailability of seeds. Beside these two lines, others were combined across the locations. It was conducted at four locations of BARI which include Joydebpur, Jamalpur, Akberpur and Potuakhali in the winter season of 2014-15. Age of transplanted seedlings varied from 25-30 days at different locations. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. The plant spacing maintained 60 cm between rows and 40 cm between the plants within the bed. The land was fertilized with cow dung, N, P, K, S, Zn and B @ 5000, 253, 90, 125, 22, 5.4 and 2 kg/ha respectively. Half of the cow dung; entire quantity of P, S, Zn, B and 1/3rd of K were applied as basal dose during final land preparation. The remaining amount of cow dung was applied in pit as basal and K in two equal installments as split at 20 and 40 days after transplanting. The entire urea was applied in three equal installments as top dressing at 20, 40 and 60 days of transplanting. Intercultural operations were done as and when needed. Measured characters include days to 50% flowering (D50%F), marketable fruits per plant (MF/Pl), average fruit weight (AvFtwt) in gram, marketable yield per plant (MY/Pl) in kg, marketable yield per hectare (MY/ha) in ton, total soluble solid in % (%TSS), locule number in fruit (Loc/Ft), pericarp thickness (PeriThick), virus incidence (DI) and virus reaction. Data was recorded from randomly selected individual plants from every genotype across replications.

Two lines AVTOV1005 and 1010 were good for yield per plant and hectare, resistance to viruses (TYLCV and TMV) and wilt (bacterial and fusarium), lycopene content, fruit shape and growth habit (DT) over the check variety and rest of the test lines.
