Regional Yield Trial of Tomato Lines for Processing

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted with four processing tomato lines of AVRDC with check BARI Tomato-3 at four locations of BARI which included Joydebpur, Hathazari, Jamalpur and Burirhat during the season 2014-2015 to evaluate the performance processing tomato lines to develop new processing tomato variety for Bangladesh. On an average of four locations, fruit number per plant were varied from 36 (control) to 58 (GPT017) while the highest number of fruits (64) were counted from the line GPT017 at Burirhat and the lowest (30) number of fruits beard in control at Hathazari. In respect of fruit yield, the highest average yield (65.17) was recorded from the line GPT017 and the lowest fruit yield (54.77) was obtained from the line GPT015. Fruit yield over location indicated that the highest yield (73.33) contributed by the line GPT017 at Burihat. The experiment having all the GPT lines may be repeated as regional yield trial (RYT) to confirm the yield potentiality and adaptability in different agro-ecological zones of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of AVRDC supplied processing tomato lines to develop new processing tomato variety for Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with AVRDC supplied four processing tomato lines viz.: GPT009, GPT011, GPT015, GPT017 with BARI Tomato 3 (as check) were considered as the materials for this study and the experiment was conducted at four locations (Joydebpur, Hathazari, Jamalpur and Burirhat) of BARI during the season 2014-2015 to evaluate the yield performance and processing attributes to develop new processing tomato variety for Bangladesh. The seeds of above mentioned lines and varieties were sown in the seedbed on October 16, 2014 at different locations. About thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in the main plot. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications having plot size of 4.8x1 m providing plant spacing of 60x40 cm having double row per bed and 12 plants per row and 24 plants per plot. The unit plot and blocks both were separated by 50 cm. The crop was fertilized with cow dung 10 ton, N 253kg, P 90kg, K 125kg, S 22 kg, Zn 5.40 kg and B 2 kg per ha, respectively. Half of the amount of cow dung and K, entire amount of P, S, Zn and B were applied during land preparation. The remaining half of the cow dung was applied during pit preparation. The rest of K and entire urea were applied at three equal installments at 21, 35 and 50 days after transplanting. Plant protection, irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data on yield and yield attributing parameters with qualitative traits were recorded from 20 inner plants of each plot escaping border plants following AVRDC guide line as below: Data on days to first and 50% flowering, plant height at last harvest, days to maturity, number of fruit /plant, average fruit weight, fruit length and diameter, fruit yield /plant, yield/ plot, yield /ha, number of seeds per fruit, shelf life, percent virus infection (at 45 DAS, 60 DAS and 75 DAS), viscosity, (measured following Bost wick consist meter method USDA, 1991), acidity and other processing quality were recorded. The experiment was laid out in the randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 3 replications. Five treatment combinations were randomly allotted in each block. The size of a unit plot was 4.8m × 1m, and the plant spacing was 60cmx40cm. Each unit plot contained 2 rows of plants (24 plants/ plot). The recorded quantitative data were analyzed statistically by F-test to find out the variation due to different treatments. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and treatment means were compared by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test following R Software 3.1.2 (Anon., 2015).

Fruit yield over location indicated that the highest yield (73.33) contributed by the line GPT017 at Burihat.The highest quantity of fine processed product-ketchup (0.83kg) was obtained from the line GPT017, while the lowest quantity of fine product (0.56 kg) exhibited from the line GPT011. The experiment having all the GPT lines may be repeated as regional yield trial (RYT) to confirm the yield potentiality and adaptability in different agro-ecological zones of Bangladesh.
