Regional Yield Trial of Ty Gene Inserted Cherry Tomato Lines for Yield and Diseases Resistance

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted with two selected cherry tomato lines of AVRDC and one advance cherry tomato line with check BARI Tomato 11 at three locations of BARI which included Joydebpur, Hathazari, and Jamalpur during the season 2014-2015 to evaluate the yield performance of cherry tomato varieties for Bangladesh. Average fruit number, fruit yield per hectare over locations and post harvest parameters in relation to qualitative characters conducted at Joydebpur were discussed. On an average of three locations, fruit number per plant were varied from 167 (SL0011) to 222 (control) while the highest number of fruits (256) were counted from the control at Joydebpur and the lowest (142) number of fruits beard in SL0011 at Hathazari. In respect of fruit yield, the highest average yield (62.13) was recorded from the line SL0012 and the lowest fruit yield (51.66) was obtained from the line SL0067. Fruit yield over location indicated that the highest yield (82.96) was contributed by the line SL0012 at Joudebpur.The experiment having all the cherry lines may be repeated as regional yield trial (RYT) to confirm the yield potentiality and adaptability in different agro-ecological zones of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of AVRDC supplied selected potential cherry tomato lines (Beta carotene rich) to develop high yielding and diseases resistant cherry tomato varieties for Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with two selected cherry tomato lines (SL0011 and SL0012) of AVRDC and one advance cherry tomato line (SL0067) with check BARI Tomato 11 at three locations of BARI which included Joydebpur, Hathazari, and Jamalpur during the season 2014-2015. The seeds of above mentioned lines and variety were sown in the on 15 October, 2014 at different location. About thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in the main plot. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications having plot size of 4.8 x1.0 m providing plant spacing of 60x40 cm. The land was fertilized with cow dung, N, P, K, S, Zn and B @ 5000, 253, 90, 125, 22, 5.4 and 2 kg/ha respectively. Half of the cow dung; entire quantity of P, S, Zn, B and 1/3rd of K were applied as basal dose during final land preparation. The remaining amount of cow dung was applied in pit as basal and K in two equal installments as split at 20 and 40 days after transplanting. The entire urea was applied in three equal installments as top dressing at 20, 40 and 60 days of transplanting. Intercultural operations were done as and when needed. Data on days to first and 50% flowering, plant height at last harvest, days to maturity, number of fruit /plant, average fruit weight, fruit length and diameter, fruit yield /plant, yield/ plot, yield /ha, number of seeds per fruit, shelf life, percent of virus infestation (at 45 DAS, 60 DAS and 75 DAS) and magnitude of beta carotene content (Analyzed at Centre for Advanced Research and Science (CARS), University of Dhaka) were recorded. For convenience, average data of all locations for five characters which include number of fruits per plant, marketable yield per hectare in ton, shelf life, TSS%and virus incidence (VI) for interpretation.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest average yield (62.13) was recorded from the line SL0012 and the lowest fruit yield (51.66) was obtained from the line SL0067. Fruit yield over location indicated that the highest yield (82.96) was contributed by the line SL0012 at Joudebpur. Overall performance was better at Joydebpur it may due to prevailing congenial environment compared to other locations. The magnitude of virus infection was recorded at Jodebpur and it was observed that no virus found to be infected in all the lines but 6.00 and 8.00% virus infection was recorded in SL0067 and BARI tomato 11, respectively at Jamalpur. Magnitude of beta carotene content revealed that the lines SL0011 and SL0012 were high beta carotene rich which was 204.60 and 227.30, respectively while other two’s were 113.00 170.5, respectively.
