Evaluation of Cauliflower Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was undertaken with nineteen collected germplasm from different sources at the experimental field of Olericulture Division, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during September 2014 to January 2015.Based on harvesting maturity and yield potentiality the lines/ variety were categorized in two group’s viz., early harvesting and late harvesting. In respect of days to 50% curd initiation earliness was found in BOB-010 (68 days) and the most delayed line was BOB-181 (78 days).Early lines BOB-010 took 78 days to harvest and the late line BOB-181 took 86 days to harvest. Harvest duration varied from 2-22 days. The line BOB-181 produced the longest curd (15.5 cm) while BOB-183 produced the smallest curd (6.0 cm). Maximum curd diameter was produced by the line BOB 013 (23.7 cm) while minimum curd was produced by BOB-181 (8.0 cm). The bigger only sized curd was obtained from the germplasm BOB-004 (960.0 g) which range was 300-960 g. The highest marketable curd yield 1200 g was recorded from the line BOB-004 and the lowest marketable curd weight was found in BOB-020 (450 g). Among the 20 lines/ variety, 6 lines viz., BOB-006, BOB-007, BOB-009, BOB-010, BOB-013 and BOB-183 were early harvesting type which required up to 80 days from sowing to first harvest and rest of the fourteen lines including BARI Fulcopi1 were late harvesting type and which required over 80 days. Considering harvesting duration, the lines were categorized into three groups viz., short duration (up to 7 days), medium duration (up to 14 days) and long duration ( over 14 days). Ten lines produced higher marketable curd, ranging 787.5-1200 g. Six lines and BARI Fulcopi 1 (check variety) produced medium yield, ranging 540.0-700.0 g and the rest two lines produced lower yield ranging 450.0-500.0 g.

Objectives:

To collect different varieties from farmers and some seed traders which were marketed in Bangladesh and the trial was set with collected nineteen varieties for evaluating their proper sowing time and yield performance.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the experimental field of Olericulture Division, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during the period of September 2014 to January 2015. The seeds of 19 cauliflower germplasm and BARI Fulkopi 1 (check) were sown on 02 October, 2014 in the seed bed. Seedlings were transplanted in the field on 04 November, 2014. The unit plot size was 1m x 4.5 m and plant was spaced in to 60 x 45 cm. The land was fertilized with cowdung-N-P-K-B-Mo@10t-240-150-220-2-1 kg/ha, respectively. The entire quantities of cowdung, P, B, Mo were applied during final land preparation and one third of N and K were applied during pit preparation. The remaining N and K were applied in 3 equal installments at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting. Other than insect and disease control all other agronomical operations were done as and when needed. Data on days to 50% curd initiation, days to 1st harvest, days to harvest maturity, harvest duration (days), no. of leaves, leaf length (cm) and leaf breadth (cm), curd length (cm), curd diameter (cm), whole plant weight (kg), marketable curd weight (kg), only curd weight (g), marketable yield (t/ha), were recorded from five randomly selected plants per entry. The data on different characters was statistically analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

From the result it was found that the cauliflower lines included in the trial were diverse in their performance such as harvesting maturity, harvest duration and marketable yield. Therefore, further trial will be conducted with different planting time to verify their performance in relation to the above characters.
