Regional Yield Trial of Op Broccoli Line

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment on the regional yield trial of open pollinated broccoli lines was conducted for the evaluation of their performance at different locations during the period of 2014-15. The treatments were newly developed open pollinated broccoli line viz. BORai002 and BARI Broccoli-1 as check. The line BORai002 produced heavier individual curd weight (249.7 g) as well as curd yield per hectare (11.18) over the check variety.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of open pollinated (OP) broccoli lines in different locations.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at different location during the period of 2014-15. Two open pollinated broccoli lines were developed by mass selections for eight years. This experiment was undertaken for regional yield trial in different agro ecological zones of Bangladesh. The experiment plot size was 5 m × 1 m maintaining 50 cm × 40 cm spacing. The seeds were sown in seed bed on 5th October, 2014 and 25 days old seedlings were transplanted to the main field. The land was fertilized with well decomposed cowdung @ 15 t/ha cowdung, 110 kg N, 70 kg P₂O₅ and 130 kg K₂O per hectare. NPK were applied in the form of Urea, TSP and MOP, respectively. Whole parts of the cowdung, TSP, Boron and Molybdenum were applied during final land preparation. The 1/3rd of Urea, 1/3rd of MOP during pit preparation and the rest in two equal installments at 15 and 30 days after transplanting. The intercultural operations such as weeding, irrigations etc. were done as and when necessary. Data on growth, yield attributes, curd and seed yield were taken timely.

Achievement/Findings:

The line BORai 002 is about a week earlier than BARI broccoli-1 and it is flat and relatively short type which has the seed production potentiality also. The line BORai002 produced heavier individual curd weight (249.7 g) as well as curd yield per hectare (11.18) over the check variety. It may be released as another open pollinated variety. Next year research is required for further confirmation of their performance.
