The study was conducted at the Plant Genetic Resources Centre, BARI Joydebpur, Gazipur during winter 2013-14 to study the variability of 16 accessions of lia shak. Variations among lia shak accessions were observed in different qualitative characters like seedling leaf marginal incisions, leaf shape, leaf division, leaf colour, siliqua surface outline and seed colour. Variations were also observed for different quantitative characters like leaf length, leaf width, seeds per siliqua, days to 1st flowering, days to 50% flowering, siliqua length, siliqua width, length of beak, plant height, days to maturity and days to harvest. The highest coefficient of variation was found in siliqua width (24.06%) and the lowest in days to harvest (8.88%).

The objective of this study was to know the variation of lia shak accessions and to identify the promising accessions for further varietals development programme. 

 

The experiment was conducted at Plant Genetic Resources Centre BARI, Gazipur during the winter of 2013-14.  Sixteen accessions of lia shak were used in this study. The experiment was laid out in non-replicated design. Unit plot size was 3m x 1.5m. The recommended doses of fertilizer were applied. The fertilizer such as Urea- 60 kg/ha, TSP-18 kg/ha, MP-40 kg/ha were applied in the field (FRG, 2012). TSP and MP were applied as basal dose and Urea was applied as top dressing of two installments. Seeds were sown in rows with spacing 50 X 20 cm. The seeds were sown on 21 November, 2013. Irrigation was given at vegetative, flowering and pod setting stage for ensuring proper growth and development of the crop. Weeding was also done as when necessary. Melathion 57EC was applied (2 ml/l) for controlling aphid. Normal cultivation techniques, intercultural operations and irrigation were applied to grow the crop. Data were recorded on eleven qualitative and ten quantitative characters as per Descriptors for Vegetables and Condiments (1995) and statistical analysis was done

In all accessions did not having any   seedling pubescence and leaf pubescence. In case of seedling leaf marginal incisions maximum (43.75%) accessions was crenate, 18.75% was undulate and dentate. 12.5% was entire and 6.25% was serrate. Among the accessions of mature leaf shape, 43.75% was obovate,  31.25% was spathulate and the rest accessions were elliptic (12.5%) and orbicular(12.5%). Mature leaf division was sinuate (43.75%), lacerate (25%), lyrate (18.75) and entire (12.25) among the accessions. Mature leaf color, maximum number of accessions showed green (81.25%) and minimum in purple green(18.75%). Siliqua surface outline maximum  of accessions (56.25%) smooth and minimum (43.75%) in undulating. In case of primary seed color after drying maximum number of accessions (62.5%) dark brown and minimum number of accession brown (12.5%), light brown (12.5%), and grey black (12.5%). Siliqua attitude was 100% erect. Range, mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variations had been calculated. On an average leaf length and leaf width were 9.70 and 5.67 cm, respectively. Number of seeds per siliqua was 13.5. Days to 1st flowering and days to 50% flowering were observed 40.87 and 55.56 days, respectively. Average siliqua length, siliqua width and  beak length were observed 36.13, 2.66 and 10.73 mm, respectively among the accessions. The plant height was observed 125.87 cm. The highest CV was found in siliqua width (24.06%) followed by plant height (21.24%) and  number of seed per siliqua (19.85%). The lowest CV (8.88%) was found in days to harvest. Wide range of variations were found among the 11 qualitative characters like leaf shape, leaf division, leaf color , seed color and etc. Good variations were found among the 10 quantitative characters. The coefficient of variations ranged from 8.88% in days to harvest to 24.06% in siliqua width.
