Scientific Officer, RARS, Jessore

The study assessed the profitability of latiraj (BARI panikachu-1) production and marketing in Jessore region. Data were collected from 60 randomly selected panikachu farmers in Jessore district and 45 traders where 30 from Jessore msrket and 15 from Dhaka market. The total quantity of fertilizer require was 2974 kg/ha of which urea, TSP, MoP, zipsum and boron were 1011 kg/ha, 1076 kg/ha, 629 kg/ha, 230 kg/ha and 28 kg/ha respectively. Total labor requirement was 910 man days per hectare. Other input material was land preparation cost was 7145 Tk./ha, seedling 37895 no./ha, manure 10000 kg/ha, insecticide cost 13044 Tk./ha and irrigation cost incur 25989 Tk./ha. Total cost of production of panikachu was 358966 Tk./ha where as 337966 Tk./ha was variable cost and fixed cost was Tk. 21000/ hectare.  Among the cost item labor cost is the high as 50.69% and fertilizer cost incurs 17.43% cost of production. The yield of rhizome and stolon were 50 ton and 35 ton per hectare. The average gross return was calculated as Tk. 655000 per hectare. The net margin of panikachu cultivation was 296034 Tk./ha. On the average, benefit cost ratio was found to be 1.82 on full cost basis and 1.94 on cash cost basis. All the co-efficient of human labor, seedling, urea, TSP and MoP were positive and significant effect on panikachu production. Manure, boron and zipsum application had negative but significant impact on the yield of stolon. Marketing cost of Faria, Bepari, Paikar and Retailer were 55.70 Tk./quintal, 239.46 Tk./quintal, 34.73 Tk./quintal and 201.86 Tk./quintal respectively. Net margin of different actors like Faria, Bepari, Paikar and Retailer were Tk. 279.30 /quintal, Tk.525.54 /quintal, Tk.165.27 /quintal and Tk.448.14 /quintal respectively. Insect infestation mainly prodonia caterpillar and foot rot disease were the main problem in the panikachu cultivation. About 95% farmer faced insect and disease problem at latiraj field. High price of input material was another problem faced by the farmer. The farmer had no marketing problem in the study area due to high demand of stolon

To assessed the profitability of latiraj (BARI panikachu-1) production and marketing in Jessore region

The present study was conducted at two upazilla namely Bagherpara and Jessore sadar upazilla of Jessore district. The study area was purposively selected considering the higher concentration of Latiraj cultivation. The study was carried out by using formal survey method. A total of 60 farmers out of which 30 from each Upazila was randomly selected for interview. It was also select 45 traders where 30 from Jessore market and 15 from Dhaka city market for seeing the marketing channel and estimate the marketing cost and margin of intermediaries of latiraj. Necessary information regarding this study was collected based on input costs, price, yields etc.

Method of data collection

Data were collected through pre-designed interview schedule during the period of 2015. Field investigators under the direct supervision of the researcher collected field level data using pre-tested interview schedule. The unit of data collection was a single latiraj plot of each selected farmers where detailed information regarding this crop cultivation were taken and analysis was done on per hectare basis. The data also collected from the traders by the pre-tested interview schedule at harvest season from the different market.

Analytical techniques

Both fixed cost and variable cost were taken into account in calculating cost of latiraj cultivation. Land use cost was calculated on the basis of per year existing lease value of land. The profitability of latiraj cultivation was examined on the basis of gross margin, net return and benefit cost analysis. The categories were developed based on the percentage of respondent farmers with respect to each technology. Collected data were edited, summarized, tabulated and analyzed to fulfill the objectives of the study. Descriptive statistics using different statistical tools like averages, percentages and ratios were used in presenting the results of the study. Cobb-Douglas production function model was used to estimate the contribution of factors to latiraj cultivation

The study assessed the level of production and marketing of latiraj (BARI panikachu 1) at farm level. The productivity of panikachu is high. The gross margin, net return and BCR are high. Human labor, seedling, urea, TSP, MoP and manure had positive and significant effect on panikachu cultivation. Six marketing channel were identified in the stolon marketing. Different actors were in stolon marketing such as faria, bepari, paikar and retailer. Marketing cost of faria, bepari, paikar and retailer were Tk.55.70/quintal, Tk. 239.46/quintal, Tk.34.73/quintal and Tk.201.86/quintal respectively. Net margin of different actors involved in the stolon traders of faria, bepari, paikar and retailer were Tk.279.30/quintal, Tk.525.54/quintal, Tk.165.27/quintal and Tk.448.14/quintal respectively. Transportation cost was found highest marketing cost item for each actor. Insect infestation mainly prodonia caterpillar and foot rot disease were the main problem in the panikachu cultivation. The farmer had no marketing problem in the study area due to high demand of stolon.
