Effect of Different Levels of Rice Straw Mulch on Garlic Under Zero Tillage Cultivation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at MLT site Atghoria, Pabna during the rabi season of 2014-15 to ascertain the effect of different levels of rice straw mulches (T₁= rice straw @ 2 t ha^-1, T₂= rice straw @ 3 t ha^-1, T₃= rice straw @ 4 t ha^-1and T₄= Farmers practice@ 1.5 t ha^-1) on garlic. The application of 2 and 3 t ha^-1 rice straw mulch treatments showed significantly higher bulb diameter and bulb yield of garlic as compared to other treatments. Maximum gross return and gross margin was also achieved from 2 and 3 t ha^-1 rice straw mulch application.

Objectives:

To assess the effect of different levels of mulch material on garlic production at the farmer’s field.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at MLT site Atghoria, Pabna during rabi season of 2014-15. BARI Rasun-1 was tested under four different levels of rice straw mulches viz. T₁= rice straw @ 2 t ha^-1, T₂= rice straw @ 3 t ha^-1, T₃= rice straw @ 4 t ha^-1and T₄= Farmers practice @ 1.5 t ha^-1. Immediately after receding of water from the field during the winter, the bulbs of BARI Rasun-1 was planted on November 12-15, 2014 in the muddy soil of the experimental plot maintaining spacing of 10 cm x 05 cm. According to treatment, dried rice straw mulch was uniformly placed in each plot immediately after planting of bulbs. The unit plot size was 8 cm x 5 cm. Recommended dose of fertilizers were applied equally in each plot. Top dressing of urea was done on 1st week of December, 2014 and 3rd week of January, 2015. Weeding was done two times on 2nd week of January and 1st week of February,2015. Two irrigations were applied on 2nd week of December, 2014 and 3rd week of January, 2015. Rovral was sprayed three times to control fungal disease. Other crop management operations were done when necessary. The crop was harvested on March 22-25, 2015. Necessary data on yield and yield attributes, disease and pest incidence and economic return were collected and analyzed.
