Collection and Evaluation of Garden Pea Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Nine garden pea accessions and BARI Motorshuti-1 as check were studied at Regional Agriculture Research Station, Ishwardi, Pabna during winter 2014-15 in a RCB design with three replications. PS Ish005 gave the highest pod yield (10.23 t/ha) due to higher pod number per plant (10.30) and the highest 100-seed weight (12.90). The yield of check variety BARI Motorshuti-1 was 9.94 t/ha. PS Ish001 also performed better considering pod yield (9.76 t/ha).

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of garden pea germplasm on yield and yield contributing characters.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at Regional Agriculture Research Station, Ishwardi, Pabna during rabi season of 2014. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications in a unit plot size 10 x 2.8 m maintaining line to line spacing of 35 cm. Nine garden pea germplasm were collected from farmer's field of northern and western parts of Bangladesh. BARI Motorshuti-1 was used as check. Seeds were sown on 15 November, 2014. Manures and fertilizers were applied at the rate of 10 ton cowdung, 47 kg N, 30 kg P and 50 kg K in the form of Urea, TSP and MOP, respectively. All of cowdung and TSP and half of urea and MOP were applied during final land preparation. Rest of urea and MOP in 2 equal installments were applied at 20 days interval. Irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data on days to 50% flowering and harvest, plant height, pod length, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, weight of 100-seeds and pod yield (t/ha) were recorded and statistically analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

PS Ish009 was the tallest (149.86 cm) followed by PS Ish002 (144.62 cm) while BARI Motorshuti-1 was the shortest (62.50 cm). Early flowering was observed in BARI Motorshuti-1 (30.23 days) and late in PS Ish006 (42.45 days). BARI Motorshuti-1 required the lowest duration (86.38 days) for harvest and the maximum duration (109.68 days) required for PS Ish006. The longest pod (6.86 cm) and the highest number of pods per plant (10.73) was recorded in BARI Motorshuti-1. Number of pods was also higher in PS Ish008 (10.53). Number of seeds per pod was maximum in PS Ish003 (8.07) and PS Ish002 (7.86). The highest 100-seed weight was recorded in PS Ish005 (12.90) and PS Ish009 (12.61). However, the highest pod yield (10.23 t/ha) was obtained from PS Ish005 due to higher pod number per plant and 100-seed weight. The yield of BARI Motorshuti-1 was 9.94 t/ha which was statistically similar to that of PS Ish005. PS Ish001 also performed better considering pod yield (9.76 t/ha). PS Ish005 and PS Ish001 were found promising in first year. So the trial should be continued for confirmation of the results.
