Plant Pathology , BARI

The experiment was conducted at BARI, Gazipur. Two set of lentil entries were evaluated against stemphylium blight disease in this trial. Set 1 was comprised with eight lentil test entries viz. BD-3807, BD-3943, BD-4053, BD-4 I34, LRIL-21-36, LRIL-22-36, LRIL-22-198 and LRIL-21-5888 which was selected from the previous years’ trial were used in this experiment. Set 2 was included 10 lentil entries viz. BLX-06004-2, BLX-04004-3, BLX- 01013-1, BLX-04005-9, BLX-07004-7, BLX-06004-12, BLX-05002-3, BLX-07003-6, ILL-5134 and LR-9-25. A susceptible check variety BARI masur-1 was used in both the sets. In set 1, lowest (1.33) stemphylium blight disease score and highest (1035 kg/ha) yield was recorded in BD-4053 and the highest (5.00) disease score with lowest (751.00 kg/ha) yield was recorded in the check variety BARI masur-1. In set 2, lowest (1.33) stemphylium blight disease score and highest (1220 kg/ha) yield was recorded in LR-9-25 and the highest (5.00) disease score with lowest (731.20 kg/ha) yield was recorded in the check variety BARI masur-1 which is statistically similar to the test entry ILL-5134.

To screen the lentil lines/germplasm against stemphylium blight under inoculated condition

There were two set of experiments conducted at PRSS, BARI, Gazipur. In the first set, eight lentil test entries viz. BD-3807, BD-3943, BD-4053, BD-4134, LRIL-21-36, LRIL-22-36, LRIL-22-198 and LRIL-21-5888 which was selected from the previous years’ trial were used in this experiment. In the second set, ten entries viz. BLX-06004-2, BLX-04004-3, BLX- 01013-1, BLX-04005-9, BLX-07004-7, BLX-06004-12, BLX-05002-3, BLX-07003-6, ILL-5134 and LR-9-25 were included in this trial. A stemphylium blight disease susceptible variety BARI Masur-1 was used as a spreader row and BARI Masur-7 was used as a standard check. Each test entry was planted in two rows of 3m long allowing a row to row space of 30 cm and plant to plant 10 cm.  Each test entry was surrounded by a susceptible check entry. Three replications were used in both the experiments. First and second set of this experiment was planted at 03 and 20 November, 2014 respectively.  The experiment was monitored regularly to observe the first appearance of the disease. Stemphylium infected plant debris which was collected from last years’ infected field was spread over the field to boost up the inoculum pressure. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Disease scoring was done following 5 point scoring scale described by Bakr and Ahmed (1992) where, 0 = no infection (HR), 1 = a few scattered leaf infections but no twig blighted (R), 2 = 5-10% leaflet infection and/or few scattered twigs blighted (MR), 3 = 11-20% Leaflet infected and/or 1-5% twigs blighted (MS), 4 = 21-50% leaflet infected and/or 6-10% twigs blighted, and 5 = above 51% leaflet infected and/or more than 10% twigs blighted (HS). The data were analyzed statistically for calculating the mean values and for test of significance. The means were compared following the Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

All the test entries varied significantly considering their disease score and yield in both the trials. In set 1, the lowest (1.33) stemphylium blight disease score was recorded in BD-4053 followed by BD-3807 and LRIL-21-5888. The highest (4.66) was in BARI masur-1 followed by LRIL-22-198, LRIL-21-36 and LRIL-22-36. Highest (1035 kg/ha) yield was produced by the entry BD-4053 which was statistically similar to the yield of the entry BD-3807 and BD-3943. In set 2, the lowest (1.33) stemphylium blight disease score was recorded in LR-9-25 followed by BLX-06004-2 and BLX-04004-3. The highest (5.00) was in BARI masur-1 followed by ILL-5134. Highest (1220 kg/ha) yield was produced by the entry LR-9-25 which is statistically similar to the yield of the entry BLX-06004-2. In general the overall severity of the disease was higher at Gazipur in this season. Disease severity was at highest level in the check entry and in some test entries. In set 1, lowest (1.33) stemphylium blight disease score and highest (1035 kg/ha) yield was recorded in BD-4053 and the highest (5.00) disease score with lowest (751.00 kg/ha) yield was recorded in the check variety BARI masur-1. In set 2, lowest (1.33) stemphylium blight disease score and highest (1220 kg/ha) yield was recorded in LR-9-25 and the highest (5.00) disease score with lowest (731.20 kg/ha) yield was recorded in the check variety BARI masur-1 which was statistically similar to the test entry ILL-5134.
