Screening of Potato Varieties/germplasm Against Late Blight Disease

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A total of twenty (20) germplasm/ varieties of potato including two resistant check varieties (BARI Alu-46 and BARI Alu-53) were evaluated against late blight disease under natural condition at RARS, Burirhat, Rangpur during 2014-15. Among the germplasm one line (Sarpomira) was selected as resistant which was found more resistant than the released resistant check varieties. The yield of Sarpomira was also higher than BARI Alu-46 and BARI Alu-53.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken to evaluate available germplasm against late blight of potato.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at ARS, Burirhat, Rangpur during Rabi season of 2014-15 following Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) having three replications. Twenty (20) germplasm/ varieties of potato including two resistant check varieties (BARI Alu-46 and BARI Alu-53) were evaluated under natural condition. Seeds of the test entries were collected from Tuber Crops Research Sub Centre, Bogra. The unit plot size was 3.0 m X 1.80 m with block to block distance 1.50 m and plot to plot distance within a block 1.0 m. The row to row spacing was 60 cm and seed to seed was 25 cm. So, each plot was ensured three rows and eight seeds in a row. The seed tubers were planted on 02 December, 2014. The recommended fertilizer dose developed by Tuber Crops Research Center (TCRC), BARI was applied. Well decomposed cow dung @ 10 t ha^-1 and zinc sulphate @ 10 kg ha^-1 was spread to soil before opening of land. A split application of Urea i.e. ½ of the recommended and full doses of TSP, MoP, Gypsum, Magnesium sulphate and boric acid were applied as row placement besides 5-7 cm of the seed planting rows on either side. The remaining half of Urea was applied as side application at 35 DAP followed by earthing up of soil by spade. Other agronomic practices were done properly. Severity of the disease was recorded by eye estimation considering the whole plot at 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 DAP. Haulm pulling was done 90 days after planting and harvesting was completed 10 days after haulm pulling. Yield data was recorded from the whole plot and converted into ton/ha.

Achievement/Findings:

Out of 20 test entries one test entry Sarpomira and two check varieties were found resistant. The other test lines completely destroyed within 70 Days after planting (DAP). In the test entry Sarpomira disease severity was 7.2% at 70 DAP. In the two resistant check varieties BARI Alu-46 and BARI Alu-53 the disease was 11.27% and 17.50%, respectively at 70 DAP. In case of yield 43.04 t/ha yield was obtained from test line Sarpomira and the yield of released variety BARI Alu-46 and BARI Alu-53 were 39.33 t/ha and 30.66 t/ha respectively. From the results and discussion it can be concluded that among the 20 varieties/germplasm only three (BARI Alu-46 and BARI Alu-53 and Sarpomira) showed resistance against late blight disease.
