Yield and Yield Components of Wheat, Coriander and Linseed Grown as Sole and Intercrops Under Different Planting Patterns

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the Rabi season of 1987-88 to determine the effect of intercrop competition on the yield and yield components of wheat, coriander and linseed. The yield and yield components of wheat (except ear length) were not significantly affected when coriander or linseed was grown as intercrop. The size of the ear decreased when wheat was grown in paired row inter cropped with coriander. Coriander and linseed appeared to loose their individual yields in inter cropping arrangements but ultimately they gave additional crops without affecting the yield of main crop. Hence, coriander and linseed can be chosen as good intercrops in wheat cultivation.

Objectives:

To determine the effect of intercrop competition on the yield and yield components of wheat, coriander and linseed grown under various planting patterns.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh in the Rabi season of 1987-88. The soil of the experimental plot was Non-calcareous Dark Grey Floodplain (Sonatola silt loam) having pH value of 6.9. The land was flat and above flood level. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications of each treatment. The unit plot size was 5m x 4m. The land was prepared to a good tilth. Fertilizers were applied at 80-95-55 kg N, P₂0₅ and K₂0 per hectare through urea, triple superphosphate and muriate of potash, respectively. Half of urea and full of triple superphosphate and muriate of potash were applied at final land preparation. Remaining half of urea was top dressed in two equal splits at three weeks of seedling emergence and at flowering stage of wheat. Wheat, coriander and linseeds were sown in rows on 12 December 1987. Intercultural operations whenever necessary were done uniformly in all the plots and the plots were provided with two irrigation. Wheat, coriander and linseed were harvested at maturity at 100 days after sowing. At maturity 10 plants for each of wheat, coriander and linseed were randomly selected and harvested from each plot from rows outside the harvest area and excluding the border rows to record the data on the yield and yield components for the respective crops. The collected data were analyzed using the Analysis of Variance and Duncan's Multiple Range Test was employed to compare the differences among treatment means.

Achievement/Findings:

In the present study, though coriander and Iinseed lost part of their individual yields but ultimately they gave an additional crop when intercropped with wheat as they had no adverse effect on the main crop. It may therefore, be concluded that coriander and linseed can be successfully grown as intercrops in wheat without having risk of yield loss of the latter. Farmers can obtain an additional economic benefit from these types of intercropping.
