A field trial was conducted at the Regional Horticulture Research Station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Chapai Nawabganj during February to June, 2015 to find out the reaction of eleven most popular mango varieties against the disease and to find out the suitable fungicide to control the disease. Among the varieties the highest incidence (24.50% & 43.12%) and severity (4.90% & 13.15%) was recorded in Khirsapat. The lowest disease severity (3.53%) as well as the highest disease reduction (87.53%) was recorded from fruits treated with Iprozim 26 WP.

To find out the reaction of different mango varieties against the disease and to find out the suitable fungicide to manage the disease mango scab

A field trial was conducted at the Regional Horticulture Research Station, Chapai Nawabganj to observe the reaction of different mango varieties to scab disease as well as to evaluate the performance of different fungicides available to mango farmers in Chapai Nawabganj district. The investigation was performed from February to June, 2015. To observe varietals reaction data on disease incidence and severity were taken in two times. First when the fruits become at marble stage and second at harvesting stage. Spray was commenced on BARI mango- 3 of 21 years old established in a mango orchard. Spraying starts just after fruit set. In order to prevent flower damage by insect pests Ripcord @ 1 ml/litre was sprayed before 15 days of flowering and was mixed with all the fungicides at first spray. The spray was continued before 20 days of harvesting of the fruit at 15 days interval. At every spray schedule, control plants were sprayed with water. Spray was stopped at 20 days before harvest of fruits. Randomly selected 100 fruits were observed from each treatment.

The development of scab was recorded following a standard severity scale (0-5) developed by Mortuza et al. (2000). Percent disease index (PDI) was measured from percent fruit area covered by the disease. To evaluate the effectiveness of the fungicides, the severity of diseases was measured by calculating the percent disease index (PDI) according to the formula of Singh (1984):

                                           Total sum of rating

PDI =    ------------------------------------------------------------------ X 100

             Total numbers of fruits graded X Maximum rating value

The experiment was laid out in a Randomize Complete Block Design with three replications. All the collected data were analyzed using MSTAT-C program. Means were compared by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 1% level of significance.

At marble stage of the fruits the incidences and severity were varied from 5.87% to 24.50 % and 1.57 % to 4.90 % respectively. However, the highest incidence (24.50%) was recorded in Khirsapat followed by Gooti (17.45%), Ashwina (116.56%), BARI Aam -3(13.45%) and Gopalbhog (13.45%). The lowest incidence (5.87%) was recorded in BARI Aam-2, while the incidence was intermediate in rest of the mango varieties. In case of severity the highest severity (4.90%) was recorded from khirsapat followed by Gooti (4.37%), Ashwina (3.39%) and the lowest severity (1.57%) was recorded from BARI Aam -1. At harvesting stage it was observed that among the varieties the highest incidence (43.12%) and severity (13.15%) was recorded in Khirsapat followed by Gooti (26.97% & 8.19%) and BARI Aam -3 (24.78% & 8.97%). On the other hand the lowest incidence (6.78%) was recorded from Fazli but the lowest severity (5.52%) was recorded from BARI Aam -2 variety. The fungicides under investigation significantly prevented the development of scab in mango fruits. It was observed none of the fungicides was able to control the disease completely. Among the fungicides used in the investigation the highest disease incidence (33.87 %) was recorded from Kasumin followed by Praoud 25 EC (3212 %) and the lowest incidence (9.53 %) was recorded from sprayed with Iprozim 26 WP followed by Rovral 50 WP (11.15 %), Cabrio Top (11.87 %) and Bavistin DF (12.18%). On the other hand, the lowest disease severity (3.53 %) as well as the highest disease reduction (87.53 %) was recorded from fruits treated with Iprozim 26 WP as compared with the unsprayed control plants followed by Rovral 50 WP (3.87% & 86.33), Cabrio Top (4.43% & 84.36%) Bavistin DF (4.78% & 83.12%) and the highest disease severity (15.83%) and lowest disease reduction (44.12%) was recorded in plants sprayed with Kasumin. The results obtained in this study conformed to the observation of Mortuza et al. (2000). The study revealed that none of the mango varieties was resistant to mango scab. But among the varieties under investigation, Khirsapat was more susceptible to the disease.  On the other hand none of the fungicides was able to control the mango scab completely. But Iprozim 26 Wp, Rovral 50WP, Cabrio Top and Bavistin DF were more effective as compared to the other fungicide and these four fungicides reduce more than 80% of the disease. So, one of these fungicide may use to control the problem.
