Development of Inbred Tomato Lines Through Segregating Population

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Nine winter tomato F4 populations were evaluated at the experimental farm of HRC, BARI during winter season of the year 2014-15. Among the tested lines, five lines (single plant selection) were selected and among these selected plants segregants GWT 102-3-1-2-8 gave the highest yield (4.35kg) and closely followed by the second highest yield 4.10kg and 4.01were exhibited by the individual segregants GWT 102-3-3-11-7 and GWT 102-2-1-12-5 respectively and five segregants have been selected for further evaluation in following year.

Objectives:

To select desirable segregants from segregating F3 population.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the experimental field of Olericulture Division of HRC, BARI during the winter season of 2014-15. Nine F4 generations derived from five commercial hybrid lines (GWT-101; GWT-102; GWT-103; GWT-104; and GWT-105) were selected for this study. The seeds of F4 generation were sown in the seedbed on 2nd week of October, 2014. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in the main plot on 2nd week of November, 2014. The experiment was laid out in non-replicated plot having plot size of 50x1 m accommodated 100 plants maintains plant spacing of 60x40 cm. The crop was fertilized with cow dung 10 ton, N-253kg (urea- 550kg), P- 90kg (TSP-450kg), K-125 (MoP-250kg), S- 21kg (Gypsum-116kg), Zn-4.9kg (Zinc Sulphate-14kg) and B-2kg (12kg) per ha, respectively. Half of the quantity of cow dung, entire P and half of the K, entire zinc and boron were applied during land preparation. The remaining half of the cow dung was applied during pit preparation. The rest of K and entire N were applied at three equal installments at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting. Plant protection, irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data on number of fruit per plant, individual fruit weight, fruit length and diameter, fruit yield per plant were recorded. The collected data on aforementioned parameters was statistically analyzed by Microsoft EXCEL program.

Achievement/Findings:

Number of fruit per plant greatly varied from 27 to 63. Maximum individual fruit weight (102.05g) was recorded from the segregant GWT 10102-3-3-11, while it was the lowest (63.62 g) obtained from the plant GWT 101-3-2-7. Fruit yield per plant was varied from 1.95kg to 4.35 kg, which was recorded from the segregants, GWT 102-3-1-2 and closely followed by the second highest yield 4.10kg and 4.01weres exhibited by the individual segregants GWT 102-3-3-11 and GWT 102-2-1-12 respectively. However, seeds of all selected individual plants are kept separately and further selection will be made in their F6 generations in the year 2015-16. Considering the horticultural traits, color and other characters, seeds of five selected individual/segregant are kept separately .
