Post-harvest Disease Management of Banana

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Chitosan (CH) in controlling anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum gleosporioides showed significant response. Application of chitosan at 1.5 and 2 % concentration both showed same 50% disease incidence, was lowest. The virulence of pathogen was declined with increasing concentration level of Chitosan. Lowest disease score was recorded 1.2 at CH 2% followed by CH 1.5% and CH 1% were 1.4 and 3, respectively. Both, total soluble solid (TSS) and weight loss (WL) were lowest 9.6 and 20.01% at CH 2% level, respectively.

Objectives:

The study has been undertaken to know the efficacy of chitosan in controlling post-harvest disease of banana

Methodology:

An experiment was carried out on controlling anthracnose disease of Banana by applying Chitosan at Plant pathology laboratory, Plant pathology division, BARI. For this experiment, Green, mature, mechanical damage free and visually spotless “Sagarkola” were collected from banana market which were harvested one day ago. Different concentration of chitosan were prepared by adding distil water. Here, four concentrations (0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2%) were applied to evaluate the efficacy of chitosan against anthracnose disease of banana. Every treatment had five replication. The banana disease was scored as 1 - 5 scale: where 1 = 0% of fruit surface rotten, 2 = 1 - 25%; 3 = 26 - 50%; 4 = 51 - 75% and 5 = 76 - 100% according to Sivakumar et al., 2002. The statistical analysis of data was carried out using standard analysis of variance- ANOVA by using MSTAT-C software (Russel and Eisensmith, 1993). Means were compared by the Duncan’s multiple tests, and statistical significance was determined at 5% level.

Achievement/Findings:

The results showed that chitosan application reduce disease incidence and severity. Chitosan application reduced disease incidence (DI) up to 50% at 1.5 and 2% concentration while 100% DI was found at 1 and 0.5% and also in control condition. Disease severity score was highest 5 in control treatment while 2% chitosan application showed the lowest 1.2 score. Weight loss (WL) of banana was declined significantly by using chitosan in store condition. Lowest 20.01% WL was gained by using 2% CH while control treatment showed highest 32.20% WL. The total soluble solid (TSS) contents of CH treated fruit were significantly lower than control. The CH 2%-treated fruit had the lowest value (9.6) followed by CH 1 .5% treated (12.0), CH 1% treated (15.6), CH 0.5% treated (17.6) and untreated fruit (20.8) at the end of storage. Chitosan had highly antifungal against C. gleosporioides which cause post-harvest rottening of banana. For controlling Post-harvest disease of banana, adding of chitosan with integrated package may give good result. For developing chitosan based integrated package needs more research work.
